I've been smoking e-cigarettes for a bit over 2 weeks now. Mine are nicotine free so I also wear a nicotine patch.

And.. it's working amazingly well! Not a hint of craving, and I'm already starting to smoke less of the e-cigarettes.

I've tried just the patch before and it just wasn't enough, I still needed the comfort of actually being able to smoke. This does the trick.

That's odd. Why not use low nicotine ones and save the money you would spend on patches?

My e-cigs are still in their box in the cupboard. I've failed miserably.

I smoke full strength.
I've failed at quitting too many times to take any chances.
My plan is to stick with full strength for at least six months, then start on the medium for an equal amount of time, and so forth, until i completely stop.

I think patches and gum and just a big scam. I would never ever bother with them. If you're going to smoke, then just smoke, and if you genuinely don't like smoking anymore you'll naturally stop doing it, like anything else.

Do you smoke? Have you in the past? If so, for how long and how much? If you've quit, have you ever failed at it before? You have the sound of one who doesn't have full possession of the facts.

Smokers have a very powerful hold over them, whether they like it or not.

I smoke, yes. I've been smoking on and off for about 20 years. Presently I smoke roughly 5 a day, but if I'm out somewhere I might smoke anywhere between 15 and 20, depending on how well the night is going. I've never failed when quitting, in fact I've never actually felt any need to try and stop, instead I've gone through phases when smoking isn't for me, it's just not something that I feel like doing, and that can last between a month and a couple of years. The longest I've ever gone without smoking is 6 years. I don't recall having any "cravings" during that time, maybe just the occasional pleasant reminiscence. I usually don't feel any desire to smoke until at least a couple of hours after getting up but if I'm quite busy I don't bother.

hehehe I live in a beautiful country where patches are subsidised so I can get the full course for about $5.

errrr no, it doesn't work like that, I've never enjoyed smoking, but the nicotine cravings are pretty tough to get over. I turn into an over emotional bitch on wheels if I don't have my fix. The patch are a safe way to get it. Safer than smoking anyway.
And if, as your said in your later post, you've never had any cravings, well you're one of the very few lucky ones.

Some people don't get addicted to opiates. I am one of those. Nicotine is a different matter however for me.

Would I ridicule or belittle those who can get addicted to opiates? No.
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

I wouldn't say I'm lucky, although I'm glad I don't have a dependancy on it. And it's not really that uncommon, I've known rather a lot of people who are the same as me. Sure, smoking can become an addiction for some, but then again it depends on each individual and their personality, predisposition. If you're unable to tear yourself away from the cigarettes, and if you really do want to not be a smoker anymore and if the patches work for you specifically then good luck to you. But they don't work for everyone and often they're just not a necessity.

I might give e-cigs a go if I can find them.

Just posted in the other e-cigarette thread in general.

I have a friend who switched to e-cigarettes about a year ago for health reasons. He loves them. He has no intention of trying to quit though. He really likes them because he used to have to go to a a fairly remote place at work to smoke whereas now he can smoke at his desk. When its 100+ degrees F and 90% humidity its a fairly nice upgrade. Also he used to smell terrible, now its undetectable.
