How would you define social degeneracy?

#1  Postby Guadalupe » Oct 21, 2019 2:52 pm

Societal decay, degeneracy, decadence, how would you define these? What are some examples of these?

I suppose I consider it to be the reversion of the values of a culture or group to an earlier, less sophisticated state.

So an example might be backtracking on our commitments to equality and human rights.

Decadence is something else though.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I was skirting around the racist and pseudo-scientific connotations of the terms as they are essentially unhelpful and anachronistic.

Social degeneracy? Letting women have babies! It is well known that women are degenerate, less perfect than men, not to mention decadent, so they should not be allowed to have babies as they will only cause societal decay by reproducing themselves thus contributing to - er... the decline and fall of the human race.

Now this is interesting...

https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Degenerate

Renewed usage: neo-Nazi and neo-reaction
See the main article on this topic: neo-Nazi

The term "Degeneracy" has come back into favor among the worst people the Internet has to offer. In context, it tends to be used to refer to people who are either not white or white but not racist (very much like the word "cuckservative"). 4chan's/8chan's /pol/ is particularly fond of using the word in a "ha ha only serious" kind of way.

I googled because I realised I had not heard or seen anyone use the word degenerate for many, many years.

And no, my previous post does not reflect my true beliefs in any way whatsoever.

The best research tool here is a quick Twitter search. If you look for 'degenerate' you get all sorts of people using it. But with 'degeneracy' you get different results. The main one seems to be professional wanker Paul Joseph Watson making a fool out of himself by going on a rant about a woman pouring a pint with her arse cheeks. Of the rest, about 10% seem to have some anime-related content and a good number of them and amongst the light-hearted jokes, there's a definite strain of right-wing anti-PC types. All-in-all, a pretty good cross section of the bizarre right-wing geek culture that the alt-right represents. And let's be honest, they've got a habit of bringing back archaic words.

How would you define someone who starts a thread, JAQs off for a while, then abandons it and starts another one?
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

Oh gawd, twitter. No thanks! I'm deffo getting old. You have to remember that I decided I'm mostly leaving the internet (twitterverse?) behind for very good reason, IWS. Life is too short!

Although, it is quite entertaining watching how the potus is using it to skewer his opponents.. or his own supposed sanity, I guess you could say.

When and why did the word degeneracy fall out of use?

What about the others? i.e. societal decay and decadence.

Ooooh, out of all the posters who have responded with all sincerity to your crap posts/threads, you pick me as one of the very few you decide to actually communicate with! I'm so flattered!

Not.

So, to paraphrase:
"This term is associated with Nazism."

"Please help me, I can't understand why this term fell out of use?"

Sometimes I wonder whether an answer would actually help.

No, it wouldn't, Thommo. Because as quoted in my post...
