Is it safe for dogs to eat lamb bones?

#1  Postby mcgruff » Aug 15, 2010 6:10 pm

Just had a leg of lamb for Sunday dinner and gave the dog the bone to chew. I thought she'd nibble daintily at the scraps of meat left on it, lick it to death and that would be about it but no: she crunched it up and swallowed it all. By the time I noticed it was too late to stop her. The bone was about the size of a fist.

I'm a little bit worried now. Can dogs scoff lamb bones without any ill effects?

It's not ideal to give dogs lamb bones as they do shatter. There is normally NO need to worry at all, but beef bones are unlikely to shatter.

as far as I'm aware raw bones are ok, when their cooked they can splinter and damage the guts, so aren't so good for them

my dog was rather useless in that regard, get him a raw bone and he wouldn't look at it till it started to smell, any chance he could get a cooked bone though... he'd eat those......

Jeeze, I hope so. My dog scoffs them in seconds, no matter how big they are. But then she's fairly large herself....

and doesn't seem to have suffered any damage so far! We also give her chicken and turkey and duck..... makes little difference to her apparently!

Thanks all for the advice. I guess if there's even a chance bones could cause harm I shouldn't give her any more.

I do like to give her something real to eat every now and then though. It's hard to resist that intense, wide-eyed look you get whenever the oven is on: "if you love me you'll give me chicken!".

As far as I know the only problem bones are poultry because they splinter into long pointy needles. At least thats what I've always heard.

Dogs will instantly die if they eat bones. This is why, sixty million years ago, God Himself invented Purina Dog chow, which he spreads over the world daily in his Infinite Wizbang (which is, of course, a convertible).

It is not safe for the lambs.

Yeah, chicken bones are pretty dangerous; they are very brittle and weak and they splinter and can cause internal injuries to dogs, including infections and possibly internal bleeding. :yuk:

Some people just aren't taking this seriously.

It breaks my heart to tell you that after a long struggle she finally had to be put down this evening. I'm still haunted by the cries of pain as I drove her to the vet, trying to hold her still with one hand as she writhed around in agony on the car seat. When I got to the vet the disabled space was taken so I had to park at the bottom of the hill. It's very steep and with the extra weight of the dog, and the radiotherapy I had last week, I couldn't quite make it to the top in my wheelchair. My arms gave out when I was only yards away and we rolled back down again, crashing through the plate glass window of the local health centre before finally coming to rest in the women's sauna. As she passed away, she gave me one last look of withering contempt. I'd failed her in her hour of need and I have to say I've never felt so awful in my life - and yet strangely aroused. It was a deeply traumatic moment and now I'll never be able to barge into a women's sauna again without thinking of my brave, brave doggie.

AHA! :P Think about that next time you make fun of a poor puppy eh, eh?

PS: I googled Purina. "Your pets are our passion" apparently. Yikes!

any raw bones ( except fish are ok) anything cooked is a danger, as they can damaged the guts etc, as when they are raw they are very flexible, but this changes in the cooking process and they turn to cement basically. just watched her, but she looks GSDX sled dog or collie? not sure...they have pretty strong guts.

You mean my dog, Redial? She's a GS x Akita.
