MODNOTE There is no moderation from RatSkep on this chat and the RatSkep staff have not endorsed this chat in any way. It is a private chat set up by Jakov LIFE and starr |
For the reasons outlined in this thread it was decided that some kind of chat room would be a good idea to try.
1. go to http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=ratskep
2. write your nickname.
3. fill in the CAPTCHA to make sure you're human.
4. ?????
5. PROFIT!
For this channel to be successful it needs to achieve a 'critical mass' of users.
Thus if you join the channel and there happens to be nobody around or nobody is talking, then please stay anyway for a while in case someone else comes. You can keep it open in the background because the window will blink to attract your attention when somebody says your nickname.
Technical details (for the geeks)
Server: irc.freenode.net
Port: 6667
Channel: #ratskep
If the nickname you choose is already in use by someone else, you will be assigned different one. If you don't like it just type /nick newnickhere and press enter.
I've been informed that some people don't know how to talk.
To talk, type your message in the message box at the bottom

Since everyone can choose their own name, it is possible for people to impersonate each other. Luckily IRC has a mechanism for you to protect your nickname.
First, check you dont get a message like this
- Code: Select all
[19:19] -NickServ- This nickname is registered. Please choose a different nickname, or identify via /msg NickServ identify <password>.
If you do, type /nick newnicknamehere until you find a nickname that nobody else has taken.
Next type /ns register passwordhere emailhere
Its probably better if you don't use the same password as you do for these forums.
Finally you should get a confirmation email. Follow its instructions and you should be registered.
Now every time you log into the IRC channel, you have to type /ns identify passwordhere.
If you want to check if someone else is being impersonated, type /ns info nicknamehere.
If someone else is using your nickname, type /ns ghost nicknamehere passwordhere to boot them off!
