Some of the laser experiments across water seem like sincere efforts to me. They get an idea, they try to test it, things don't work out like they thought they would for one reason or another, they re-group and try again. I certainly didn't get the impression they're fudging data.

It's true they discount established science - they believe they are being lied to. The interesting question to me is why are people believing they are being lied to in such a systematic way.

If they are genuine then they are incredibly incompetent. A quick search would have turned up the WiKi on the Bedford Levels experiment (didn't you post on that as well?) and anyone trying to be scientific would design the experiment to avoid the claimed problems with that.
To ignore those well known issues is either stupid or deliberate exploitation of known phenomena to give a false appearance of flatness.

After spending a great deal of time observing various cognitive dysfunctions people have I don't believe stupid or deliberate exploitation are the only possibilities. I also wouldn't underestimate the general lack of scientific understanding that abounds. Add to that the internet, where people can find reinforcement for anything they want to believe along with personal validation from a like minded community and you can convince yourself all sorts of things are true or false.

You may be right, but then the glaring question remains: Why the fuck are you posting such 'cognitive dysfunction' and 'lack of scientific understanding ' here and calling it 'science'?

To know the basic facts you have to have a certain faith that the scientific community is basically trustworthy, i.e. self correcting over time. But what happens when you don't have that faith? You try what seems like an obvious experiment to you and get fooled by something you don't understand.

No, you don't. You can do whatever tests you like. If the experts say refraction cause effect X you can test that to see if they are correct. You can elevate the laser to minimise the effect.

Some of the laser experimenters did just that. But you can't redo all the experiments science has done. I think it's hard for a scientific minded person to imagine what it's like to be a non science believe. Some people put more credence in their own feelings than in facts.

What you don't do if you are interested in science is just ignore it and repeat known errors over again.

But sometimes people don't know that there is an error in their experiment.

There is no excuse for ignorance of the science. You don't have to take any of it on faith, but you should damn well known what it is when it's this easy to find and understand. Test your basic assumptions, like "laser beams are always perfectly straight."

These people seem to be trying to test as best they can to me. Perhaps you're expecting too much from them. But I think what might help is more scientists helping them understand what they are doing wrong instead of just laughing at them, mocking them, confronting them in hostile ways. Just explain what other experiment they might do to show what they're doing wrong. For example. The level experiment in multiple locations seems popular with flat E'ers. Someone needs to explain to them what's wrong with that experiment when they post it. Here's what I'm talking about:

Well some of these folks ... - well here's how rocket man mad Mike put it:

from
"This whole tech thing," he said in the June interview. "I'm really behind the eight ball."

"We were kind of looking for new sponsors for this. And I'm a believer in the flat Earth," Hughes said. "I researched it for several months."

There is surely no shortage of explanations out there, but all the people who know the science are in on the conspiracy! Science and explanations and experiments won't convince such people. Their belief isn't rational and nor is your faith in them.

And he got the money he wanted. The 'round earthers' would have paid for a plane ticket or a weather balloon and a camera at most. He wanted to fly a DIY rocket so his research was appropriate to that goal.:nono:

Does he reveal what research he did? Given he managed to build a launch system and a capsule that didn't quite kill him the first time he must have done some research into that. Not enough to realise that acceleration hurts though.

I think his real goal is to win a Darwin Award.

Well, you may be right about that. I mean, I haven't had much personal success in convincing people who believe that Pluto is having major influence on their life that it is not. And just forget about trying to convince people who believe in virgin births that it might not have went down that way. But I think my luck will be better with folks that are actually trying to do experiments.

How crazy could these people be?

The diverging shadows cast by trees standing beneath a small sun-lamp hanging somewhere in the snowglobe realm ...er, I mean... the parallel shadows cast by trees exposed to parallel light waves from a very large, distant light source.

Obviously the snow hides the fact that the ground is curved at that point, causing the diverging shadows to look parallel. The diverging shadow of the WTC twin towers came too close to revealing the truth, so the CIA put a stop to that one.

Flat-Earthers naturally reject the idea of global warming. However, the more expansive thinkers among them at least embrace the notion of planar warming...

So all the other planets are round and so is the sun but not the earth? Good grief.
