Michael Schumacher 'fighting for life'

#1  Postby Doubtdispelled » Dec 30, 2013 12:46 pm

Prof Jean-Francois Payen told reporters that if Schumacher had not been wearing a protective helmet "he wouldn't be here now".

"We had to operate urgently to release some pressure in his head," the anaesthetist said.

Neurosurgeon Stephan Chabardes said that a post-operative scan had shown "diffuse haemorrhagic legions" on both sides of Schumacher's brain.

:(

Poor guy. I feel for his family too, especially his teenage son who reportedly was with him at the time of the accident.

Oh my gosh, how awful.

I trained and competed very hard in snowboard racing as a kid. I saw this happen to so many friends. It's a major reason I quit. Same with diving. I intended to become a professional diver but realised the number of friends and colleagues I'd lose and couldn't handle it.

I really hope he pulls through. I hope his family is alright, regardless of the outcome. This is so sad.

Was a big fan of Ferrari/Schumacher when I was younger and into motor racing. I even forgave him for his misplaced L'Oréal commercial (I like to think he was taking the piss). Knowing him he was probably taking unnecessary risks. Hope he's ok.

There are already commemorative pages on facebook claiming he's dead and clamouring for "likes". How low can you go?

That one celebrity in Quebec suffered a similar thing - was alert and talking then no hope despite best efforts. :(

I hope he makes it. And I hope his family gets through this okay as well.

I am really no good at expressing these feelings and not feeling that I am being insincere.

One of the most skilled drivers ever. I remember him winning a race back in '94 (?) when his gearbox only had 5th left. Simply stunning.

Hope he recovers.

Fuck. Too bad prayer doesn't work or I'd pray for him.
Я пью за разоренный дом,
За злую жизнь мою,
За одиночество вдвоем,
И за тебя я пью, -
За ложь меня предавших губ,
За мертвый холод глаз,
За то, что мир жесток и груб,
За то, что Бог не спас.

According to reports I've read, Schumacher at least had the good sense to wear a crash helmet during his off-piste ski-ing. Those same reports say that if he hadn't been wearing a crash helmet at the time of his accident, he would now be dead. The fact that he's walked away from several fairly hairy crashes in F1, illustrates the dangers of off-piste ski-ing pretty graphically. Though of course, F1 cars are designed to protect the driver in an impact, whereas skiers tend not to have carbon fibre bodyshells keeping them separated from a lot of pain.

It's never a good idea to go skiing while angry.

Sincerely, though, I hope he can recover with minimal neurological deficit. This interesting article, written in layperson terms, describes the assorted traumatic brain injuries and how they are treated.

Yeah, he had a lot of determination and sheer mastery on the track. When it was raining, the outcome of the race was almost a foregone conclusion as there was no-one to match him on a wet track. I was never a big fan, having another team to shout for, but damn, I would hate for him not to recover from this.

He's had another operation, and there is reportedly a slight improvement in his condition.

Even if he does recover his driving days are over even if they were not already.

Still I wish him well...hopefully not with any serious lingering brain damage

News report that some journalist tried to enter his hospital room dressed up as a Catholic priest but was stopped by security personnel

Edit: added missing word "priest"

Speaking to German newspaper Die Welt, Kehm said: “Apparently, a journalist disguised as a priest has tried to get access to Michael’s room.

“This is something I would not have thought possible. As soon as his disguise was recognised, he expelled from the hospital.”

The number of media personnel outside the hospital has risen to over 100 since Schumacher’s arrival at Grenoble University Hospital on Sunday, with German, French and Italian journalists joined by those from the United Kingdom as well as Australia and Arabic channel Al-Jazeera.

He came second.

Not only was he an exceptionally great driver he was a highly skilled pitlane politician. If I was an IDer I'd say he was was perfectly made for F1.

I hope he recovers. He needs to see Vettel take all his records.

BBC reporting some improvement but, really, that means nothing for a head injury.

I'm at a loss, trying to understand why a bloke who was really good at driving a fucking car but fucked up on an expensive holiday most of us can't afford is more worthy of our concern than the eleventy million other poor cunts who are suffering and dying largely due to no fault of their own.

Yes, it's sad when any rich adrenaline junkie runs into a tree and dies. What's so fucking special about this one?
