Why is Jersey city not part of New York, or am I being a dumb foreigner?

Actually I could ask that question about lots of surrounding places, but looking at a map it seems especially pertinent to Jersey, a short hop across the Hudson from Manhattan.

Don't confuse New York the city ...best said NYC ....with New York the State.

Jersey City is part of New Jersey ....a state.

I was aware that New Jersey was a state distinct to New York state. I'm just curious about the origins of 'New York City' I guess, and why all of the areas around the Hudson weren't integrated therein. I mean, for instance, Jersey is much closer to Manhattan than Staten Island.

I'm guessing the answer probably has its origins in complex history/politics.

Manhattan is not New York City.

Just like Toronto is the not the GTA ( Greater Toronto Area ).

New York metropolitan area

The New York metropolitan area, also referred to as the Tri-State Area, is the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass, at 4,495 mi2 (11,642 km2).[4] The metropolitan area includes New York City (the most populous city in the United States), Long Island, and the Mid and Lower Hudson Valley in the state of New York; the five largest cities in New Jersey: Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, and Edison, and their vicinities; six of the seven largest cities in Connecticut: Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Norwalk, and Danbury, and their vicinities.

New York City is split up into five boroughs, which are the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Each borough has the same boundaries as a county of the state.

You don't understand my enquiry, Sir. I'm aware of the situation at present, I'm just puzzled by how it came to be.

Started out as New Amsterdam, but the locals didn't like bitterballen and raw herring.

Maybe I haven't conveyed my point clearly enough, I dunno, but I'm thinking back to the origins of the city and am wondering why some areas in proximity were included but others not.

As I said, I'm guessing it's down to complex history/politics. No worries.

My mom's family lived in the suburbs of Newark, New Jersey and I remember this meadow across the street from their house and if you went into the meadow and looked out over the hill you could see the entire NYC skyline. I loved how close they were to the city. Easy enough to a commute into the city, but not have to deal with living there.

If only there was something where you could ask, or even type a question and it gave you an answer. Sucks, but that's the observed world in which we live.

Naively, I asked that question about New York in the first instance too spontaneously. It quickly became apparent to me that such matters have complex answers, if any answers at all. I love history, so maybe I'll do the google thing and follow the links at some point.

People in power try to preserve their fiefdoms. They don't always succeed, but frequently they do. You might be looking at an example of where they succeeded. It's much more fun, as you know, to ask after cases where they did not succeed. Nothing succeeds like success, and nothing fails like failure.
