Not exactly. Competitors are grouped by class and sent off separately. Somehow, Schmitz's car was penalised, probably for some procedural infraction, and was made to start at the back of the grid. Here she is shown making her way through a gaggle of GT4s with her GT3 class vehicle in order to rejoin the other GT3s. Most drivers in the GT4 class knew they were not racing against GT3 cars and just let her through on her way to join the other GT3s she was actually racing against. Take note of the number of drivers who waved her through or used their blinkers to do so. That's why she shook her arm at one of the GT4 competitors who was not aware of this and repassed her after she got past him.

Schmitz did finish up outright winner in this race. She was the only driver who chose to drive on slicks. Imagine passing someone on tyres designed for dry roads at 270km/h in the rain.

I was watching the news on TV that had a quick item on Collins' life, with some clips of interviews he did. There was one thing he said that I thought was really interesting and actually very inspiring. He mentioned that after returning to earth the crew did a lot of publicity tours, both in the US and other countries. Collins mentioned that when people greeted him, they didn't say something like 'Well done you Americans, great accomplishment.' Instead they said something like 'We did it! We went to the moon.', the 'we' meaning 'we humans'. The mission transcended all divisions and it seemed that in some deep sense people really perceived of humanity as a collective 'we' and I sensed Collins' agreement with this sentiment.

There's a Seinfeld Tull for everything. Micheal Collins did something that I can't really even imagine doing. Now there's a good driver. (BTW, Seinfeld actually had a bit when he mentioned the pilot who stayed behind, though not by name.)
