I don't quite get Tyson's response. If one assumes Bear Mountain is 60miles from Manhattan (which I can't confirm) then the answer does seem to come out to 170ft (ish, I used meters for heights above sea level and converted units at the end, assuming bear mountain was 391m tall). Has he just corrected the actual distance and/or height from Bear mountain to Manhattan?

The flat earth has become a bit of a meme in the last year or so, at least on YouTube.

Usually after I've been drinking, I occasionally entertain myself by having a root around in some of the videos these people put together - they are so completely, utterly, mind-bendingly, excruciatingly barking mad, warped, insane, and generally bonkers, that they make Ray Comfort and Kent Hovind look positively rational and well grounded in evidence.

If you're up for a giggle, google Eric Dubay, he's one of the main guys. I still can't make up my mind whether he actually believes it all, or is a complete Poe just in it for the YT hits.

Be careful though. Your brain might just shut down permanently if you watch more than a few minutes of it. I recommend prophylactic vodka in large quantities.

Just to whet your appetite, their claims include the notion that the moon doesn't reflect sunlight, it generates its own, and it's a light that cools things that it illuminates. There's also no such thing as gravity, and space is just a NASA fabrication. Ships don't disappear over the horizon, they're fully visible if only you can zoom in enough with a big lens.

And the sun is only 30 miles wide and 3000 miles away.

Best one by far is the one about the london-liverpool railway and the altitude of birmingham. Ignoring whatever crazy-arsed surface he thinks the sea would form if the world was not flat, did birmingham always need to be a mile above sea-level, or was that only after they built the railway?
