Morgellons - psychotic internet "diagnosed" skin condition

Morgellons (/mɔːrˈɡɛlənz/) is the informal name of a self-diagnosed, scientifically unsubstantiated skin condition in which individuals have sores that they believe contain fibrous material.[1][2] Morgellons is not well understood, but the general medical consensus is that it is a form of delusional parasitosis. The sores are typically the result of compulsive scratching, and the fibers, when analysed, are consistently found to have originated from clothings and other textiles.

A friend suffered from this recently, believing that the fibres were coming out of her skin. It is known that anti-psychotic medication helps sufferers of the morgellons delusion. Of course, the origin of the fibres are fabrics, and they STICK to the moist sores, appearing to the sufferer that they ORIGINATE in the sores/skin. The friend had recently lost both parents and couldn't find work to boot. Basically, stress induced psychosis is a thing. Luckily she's better now and did not, in the end, end up going to consult with a visiting European "expert" (quack) in morgellons who charged just £1500 for an hour. Lots of made up sicknesses on the net these days for those suffering a psychotic break. Perilous.
