Atheist Temple

#1  Postby DoctorE » Jan 26, 2012 10:39 am

Ok... uuhh; HELLO WTF

Atheists have long criticised devout followers of faith. But now it seems Atheism is stealing from that very religious tradition by erecting a temple of worship.

Author Alain de Botton announced plans to build an Atheist temple in the U.K., reports DeZeen magazine.

A collaboration with Tom Greenall Architects, the structure will be built in the heart of London.

Dedicated to the idea of perspective, the black tower will scale 46 meters (150 ft), with each centimeter honoring earth's age of 4.6 billion years, notes Wired.

But a place of worship isn't the only attribute from organized religion that Atheists can benefit from, says de Botton. In his newly released book "Religion For Atheists," the author points to design, art and community to inspire and attract a following.

Though de Botton has yet to announce a final date for opening the temple, he hopes to create a network of such buildings across the U.K., according to ArtsInfo.

"Perspective" obviously, I imagine he'll be praying in the hope that non-god will give him some.

It's a silly idea and a little bit redundant as well. There are two places that I know of in London that serve the humanist, secular, freethought, atheist societies allready and none of them have temples:

http://www.bishopsgate.org.uk/

http://www.ethicalsoc.org.uk/spes/index.php

Does anyone know of any others?

I'm not sure who it's supposed to be aimed at. Speaking for myself I'm primarily atheist because I have an aversion to religion. The rationalisation comes after that. I can't stand the droning of the sermon, the obligatory standing, sitting and kneeling, the muttering of prayers and responses, the (ironically) souless music and singing, the time taken out of my day when I could be playing Playstation, the taste of unwashed priest cock.. etc. But most of all the repitition. It bores the shite out of me. Even if I did visit this temple once I'd be like, "That's nice" and then I'd be off seeking the next thing to have a gander at.

What are they going to be doing in there anyway? Clapping and singing to Slayer and Marilyn Manson? Because if they're going to be singing All Things Dull and Ugly and listening to classical music they can fuck right off :hand: And will there be ritualistic sex? Enquiring minds need to know. I'm not going just to listen to people wax lyrical about humanism, and 'morals' and 'values'. :yuk:

And they built those guillotines to provide a humane form of execution. Compared to what went before in pre-revolutionary France, they were positively enlightened.

As to the substantive of an atheist temple, what fucking nonsense. Now LionIRC will be saying, "See, told you -atheism is a religion.", and however wrong we all know that to be (including Lion), it'll be harder to refute.

I think I get the point, but at this moment in history it will be viewed as the fulfillment of apocalyptic prophesy and the worship of The Beast, etc. Maybe premature at best.
