India Jains: Why are these youngsters renouncing the world?

#1  Postby Keep It Real » Jul 08, 2019 1:25 pm

Hundreds of young people belonging to India's Jain community have begun renouncing the material world to become monks who always walk barefoot, eat only what they receive as alms and never bathe or use modern technology. The BBC's Priyanka Pathak explores why.

Well that's one way to tackle AGW

It's nice to live in a world that's plentiful enough that they're able to do that and still survive. I wonder how long they'd last if everyone else did it too. I've tried to figure out what they actually contribute, but as far as I can tell, monks are just beggars with better PR.

Living in monk world here, I tend to keep my opinions about clergy to myself, but when pushed to explain my thoughts about the clerical class, I call them parasites on the human body. I've only had this discussion with extremely progressive, open-minded Thais, but all but one of them was still shocked, slightly horrified, and perhaps a bit nauseous at the concept. They're just held in too high a regard. Your son, brother, father puts on a robe and an entirely different status in one motion, and you pay respect to them in thought and deed. Fucked up shit in my book.

There have always been robe-n-sandel dudes wandering about. In times of plenty their rice bowl gets filled, in lean times they either starve or go back to work in the paddy fields. Plenty of Christians did it back in the day, and there are still monkish religious orders. Why they're looked at with anything other than faintly amused contempt is beyond me.

Even more importantly, if you can't stop eating Jains, would we say you have a Jains addiction?

They are loonies and the fuckwits who write for the BBC will unquestioningly lap up their drivel as they do with any other religious headcases, especially Eastern religions. The BBC has always had its tongue firmly wedged up the sphincter of religion, funded by the public at large. Nothing changes.

Dhruvi, days ahead of her deeksha, says her guru is "everything to me".

"She is my world. Whatever she says, that is it."

Almost all Jain novices speak with similar warmth of their gurus. It is clear that these religious leaders also inspire tremendous obedience and loyalty.

Fucking morons.

Because they feel the world has renounced them and that they (as just a handful or so) are unable to do anything to change the situation. So they withdraw.

Seeing the thousands of people demonstrating around the world about AGW where little or nothing permanent is achieved, where some countries and corporations still carry on as though there isn't a problem, where the world population is increasing (seemingly without control), well, I think I can see the Jain's point.
I have NO BELIEF in the existence of a God or gods. I do not have to offer evidence nor do I have to determine absence of evidence because I do not ASSERT that a God does or does not or gods do or do not exist.

Withdrawing looks better, though, if you still have a positive balance in your bank account when you do it.

Kids withdrawl, that's what they do. Fuck your capitalist system! Then they get jobs and work for Da Man till they're ready to drop in harness. If they're lucky they get a doublewide in Florida and vote Republican. Such is life.

Walking barefoot, eating what other people give them and never taking a bath. That totally describes every male teenager here in Germany.
