You like being called a Mug?

Do you know what it actually means? If you do, I'd be surprised that you were telling the truth with that comment...

I was making light of the moment. Truth is, I don't really give a fuck either way.

Fuck me, this place is turning into a nursery. Nobody should get a warning unless a 'victim' complains. There are no victims here, squire.

How do you know they haven't?

They issue modnotes to inform of advisories and official warnings. Are you seriously suggesting they should add a modnote saying "This post has been vetted and found within the auspices of the FUA." to every single post where a warning is not issued?

There was no personal attack in the post in question. Whilst James and myself could hardly be classed as bosom buddies, he seems to be the only one speaking sense regards this matter (apart from yours truly, of course ;) ) Kudos, James; I applaud your attitude.

Of course it was a personal attack. And quite a few other people think so too. But as long as jamest is happy to get called a mug, then more power to him!

Wrong. Warnings are awarded on the basis of breaches of the FUA, and not on whether the supposed target feels umbrage or not. It don't matter a monkey's toss whether James is happy or not.

ETA; Your argumentum ad populum is a logical fallacy, even if it was supported by actual names of your fellow thinkers (which it isn't).

The point is, I'm less likely to care if he doesn't care. It certainly was a personal attack, but if jamest has no problem with it, then I have no problem with it.

Wrong. You need no help to that end. You are a past master at it.

James wrote, "The shysters keep quoting me out of context and stuff, and are making me look like a mug."

1) The only possible personal attack in that post is where James calls (unspecified) forum members 'shysters'.

2) James clearly states that they are making him look LIKE a mug and not that they have proved that he is one. My response was to that comment. (Had I placed a ;) or  at the end, I doubt this ridiculous derail would have ever happened.)

Despite the parlous literacy of the above quote, I would say that to an extent, that individual did have something resembling a point. After all, if it's possible to explain the fundamental concepts of something as abstract as string theory to a lay audience (a task that the BBC Horizon TV series succeeded in performing on more than one occasion), then it should be possible for those with genuinely robust ideas to express them, without having to resort to vast swathes of convoluted semantic sophistry.

Of course, genuine philosophers, as opposed to mere assertionists posturing as such, are capable of this. I'm reminded here of some of Kierkegaard's early existentialist work, and his succinct clarion call for the elevation of the "common man" to the "uncommon man". But he was, in this instance, simply stating a notion that most here would eminently agree with, namely, that we should be striving to educate as many as possible, stretching their minds, and encouraging them to rise intellectually above their origins. I consider myself extremely fortunate indeed, that I was possibly amongst the last to experience such resolute pursuit of education as a calling in my youth.

How are a shower of such clueless unrepresentative and unpopular wankers able to poison so many of our great institutions during the brief period of office leading up to their return to long-term irrelevance?

So you're blaming the coalition for this, without a shred of evidence, and even after numerous Tory and Lib Dem MPs have come out and said it should be played?

The BBC is editorially independent of government. You ought to take your venomously deceitful accusations to the Conspiracy Theories forum, where they will sit well alongside the secret lizards and Joos did 9/11 claptrap.

Supposedly A4H is an "agnostic", he doesn't believe in god, which makes him atheist to everyone but him. I guess every post he ever made could fit well in this thread.

I feel a new movement coming up; skepticism+.
I love how these people consider themselves intellectually superior to atheist/skeptics, while they themselves continuously and consistently commit the conflation fallacy when criticising their atheist and skeptic peers.
