There's a scene in Clavell's "Shogun" where two samurai are talking about Jesus. One says "Not much of a god if he allowed himself to be crucified". The other answers "I'd have taken their heads".

I reread it every 5 years or so, just like Lord of the Rings, The Stand, and Dune. Actually it's probably time for Dune again. I just reread the whole Dark Tower series. I'm just not finding a lot of decent science fiction, horror, or fantasy these days, though Jim at Ratz recommended Glynn Stewart, and his sci-fi is pretty good though just a little Young Adultish. SO much of it seems to be YA stuff and utterly predictable.

You need to get yourself some John Norman. That old boy is still churning out the sci-fi decades on. Far from most people’s cup of tea, but after the first four books the level of detail is remarkable. If you can handle/forgive the dizzying misogyny I’m sure you’d enjoy the stories. There are a couple of books in the series to avoid that will not ruin the story. Weighty tomes they be. Swords, sandals and laser beams.

Haven't read any Gor in decades. Where men are thick-thewed and women are scantily clad with some sort of chain collar.

never read any gor, and I must admit I'm leery of it... I fear it being so stereotypical it will become boring before the first chapter is over.

when I want that kind of literature, I dig out Norman Spinrad's Iron Dream.

They novels certainly have their moments but in the main they are high adventure, and intelligently written. Some detail is given over several pages and is occasionally hard work to get through, the construction of the long bow for example takes half a chapter iirc.
Mostly enjoyable pulp. Sweeping stories that connect up throughout the more than 20 heafty books. Yeah, misogyny abounds here but it’s not all knuckle-dragging. Loosely based on Arabic Islamic culture, wouldn’t you know. Think there’s closer to thirty books now. John Norman has to be in his 80s..

Oh. And they vastly improve after book three, in style and script. The early books are Edgar Allen Rice in style, after that Norman ups the vision.

I know it's off topic, but why do you use it? I rarely access RatSkep on my phone, but when I do, I just use Chrome. That has its own issues, but not the sort of blood-pressure raising ones that Tapatalk seems to.
