A few years ago, the record for heavy lifting aircraft was held by the Antonov 225:

Have any of you made it to McMinnville, Oregon to have a look at Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose? It's amazing enough that men can build such things today, but to have done it over sixty years ago under war materiel restrictions is more so.

I saw it at Los Angeles when the Queen Elizabeth I was docked there.
The best of course is the Smithsonian Aerospace museums in Washington

Meanwhile ... what's the shortest distance within which you can land a fixed wing aircraft, without any special modifications of the sort you see on a V-22 Osprey?
Try this guy ... who landed a standard looking light aircraft in just 10 feet 5 inches ...
He also managed to take off in less than 15 feet.
Though I gather the planes that take part in this very unusual competition don't fly very fast once they're airborne ...

I've seen a sailplane land vertically from 10' with zero forward momentum...if the wind is strong enough ...anything can land and take off in a very short space.
There is a lift versus drag formula that is not friendly to forward motion unless you have a 747 with barn door sized flaps.
