Basic Science Brings Light to the Poorest Homes

You must take a look at this video.

In the Philippines, deep in the dankest and darkest corners of a poor 'village' one man has changed the lives of many. Using the most basic scraps of junk and a small amount of a common household chemical he gives these people light-bulbs with out electricity. And they work very well indeed.
Mighty impressed.

Basic Science Brings Light to the Poorest Homes

It does, doesn't it! A little heart-warming story for sure.
In a country dominated by those 'charitable' religions one poor man, with crap we throw away every single day, warms the misery of poorer neighbours. And it costs but pennies.
Sometimes I like humanity.

That is absolutely awesome!! I'm going to try that in my backyard garden shed.

What is the chemical reaction occurring here? The illumination is quite staggering.

According to this article:
It works simply: The water defracts the light, letting it spread throughout the house instead of focusing on one point. The bleach keeps the water clear and microbe-free.

Incredibly simple and effective.

I also saw a video once about some guy who'd made a fridge that was set into the ground and had like two layers of buckets or something.. seem to remember that working quite well too.

If I ever build a new house, light pipes are certainly going to be in the design.
