 Bloomberg calls it a drone, and I suppose that it is: "The Secret Air Force Space Drone Heads Back Into Orbit" | Bloomberg (autoplay video on the linked page)

A classified Air Force space drone is returning to orbit again, and this time NASA will use the flight to see how 100 or so “materials of interest” hold up in the murderous environment of space.

Space stresses materials with temperature extremes, debris, micrometeoroids, direct sunlight, and atomic oxygen and can erode many of the paints, polymers, and composites that NASA and private space companies use as protective coatings on their craft. Such research becomes only more critical as the agency contemplates longer, deep-space explorations, such as a mission to Mars in the 2030s. NASA now has some space in the 29-foot-long Air Force drone to carry out the testing—which involves samples about the size of a quarter and extends research that began in 2001—for possible use in future spacecraft.

. . .

Besides the materials research, the Air Force plans to test an experimental propulsion system.

For more on that last sentence: "New details emerge about electric propulsion experiment aboard X-37B" | Spaceflight Now

It is a Hall thruster electric propulsion test to enable in-space characterization of design modifications that are intended to improve performance to the units onboard Advanced Extremely High Frequency military communications spacecraft, officials said Monday.

Produced by Aerojet Rocktdyne, the AEHF satellites’ Hall thrusters are 4.5-kilowatt units that use electricity and xenon to produce thrust for maneuvering satellites in space. The novel electric propulsion system produces a whisper-like thrust by ionizing and accelerating xenon gas.

Unlike conventional chemical engines that deliver substantial boosts with each brief firing, the electric system needs the stamina to operate for exceptionally long periods of time to harness its 0.06-pound-thrust into orbit-changing power.

Swiss delivering mail by drone
2015-07-07

Bas-Vully, Fribourg, Switzerland

Wondering where your package is? Look up!

Switzerland's postal service said Tuesday it had begun testing parcel deliveries by unmanned drones, although widespread use of the flying postmen is not likely to kick in for another five years.

Postal service executives showed off the drones for the first time Tuesday and said initial tests of the machines' post-delivery abilities would run until the end of July.

The snow-white drones consist of four branches with propellers on the end extending from a hollow ring the size of a toilet seat. A yellow box, bearing the postal service logo, is lodged in the middle.
"The drone has an extremely light construction and is capable of transporting loads of up to one kilo over more than 10km with a single battery charge," Swiss Post said in a statement.

The drone "flies autonomously, following clearly defined, secure flight paths, which are drawn up by cloud software developed by Matternet [the drone's US manufacturer]", Swiss Post added.

They have some interesting uses, too. Some punks lit the old baseball stadium on fire in Eugene last week. It was built in 1938, and on the historic register. Burned to the ground in 30 minutes.

The stability of that camera platform is astonishing. He didn't identify the hardware he used.

After adoption of new regulations covering the operation of drones in Japan, Tokyo police are setting up a "drone squad" to deal with illegal use of drones.

"Drone squad to be launched by Tokyo police" | BBC

The police unit will patrol important buildings such as the prime minister's office.

If a suspicious drone is detected, the operator will be warned via loudspeakers on the ground.

But if he or she fails to respond, police will launch drones equipped with nets to bring down the device.

In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration has decided that all drones between .55 lb. (about .25 kilo) and 55 lbs. (about 25 kilos) owned by private citizens must be registered, beginning Dec. 21, 2015.

"Close encounters prompt FAA to require drone registration" | Newsday

Those hoping to find a drone under their Christmas tree, take note: Starting Monday, federal registration is required.

The new rule lands amid growing concern over the soaring popularity of camera-equipped hobby drones — and a sharp rise in sightings by alarmed commercial pilots.

As of Dec. 6, there were 1,158 unmanned aircraft sightings reported by pilots or crew in the United States, including some close encounters, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. That’s up from 238 such sightings in 2014.
