Firefox 9 breaks internet

#1  Postby hackenslash » Jan 14, 2012 3:41 pm

Firefox recently updated to version 9 automatically, and promptly broke my internet connection (even other browsers wouldn't work). I rolled back my system to before the install and, though Firefox wouldn't work and kept hitting errors, I at least had a connection. I attempted to update Firefox several times, but the same result each time. I have just found an install file for Firefox 8, and now everything is hunky dory.

Any suggestions?

Yes, indeed! Although, having said that, I've just checked and I'm using Firefox 9.0.1, but it's the Mac version...

Hmmm. Obviously it doesn't like something in my settings. I'll investigate further.

I suspected as much. :) Works fine on Win7 for me as well, though.

Works fine for me as well, I have a Win7 machine.

Hack, try completely uninstalling Firefox. Reboot when you have uninstalled it, and check for any files that might have been left behind. Make a backup of the registry, and then clean any registry entries that have the words "Mozilla" and "Mozilla plugins" or similar. If you are not comfortable with playing around with the registry, don't touch it. Careful though, if you use Thunderbird as your e-mail client, some plugins may be common. Then reboot again, download firefox again, and do a clean install.

Try Pale Moon, as Emo Bear mentioned in a thread here:

http://www.rationalskepticism.org/gener ... l#p1131862

It uses less resources and has never crashed on me since I started using it. And it is compatible with most (I think 99%) of the add-ons that you might currently be using with Firefox.

If you're tempted to do this back-up your FF profiles folder just in case. http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Bac ... nformation

If it broke the internet everyone, then it's likely to be something like a bad proxy got set, I have seen this. But Palemoon is sooooo much faster, especially good for 64-bit machines

That doesn't sound like a browser issue though?
