One of the great things about Android is the kinds of programs you can get for it.
Need a file manager? File Manager. Need a torrent downloader? TTorrent. Need a media player that can play mkv files? MX Video Player. Need a NES emulator? John NES. Don't like the default browser? Boat Browser Mini.

Well, I gave it a try, listened to some different musical styles (from metal to alternative pop-rock to classic to jazz), and I have to say, I'm not sure about this. There is a notable difference in sound between the regular standard Galaxy player and the PowerAmp player, but I'm not really sure which one I like better (I had both on the Rock preset). The standard player has a better interface, imho. I don't use the library thingy, I like selecting my files in folders as I do on the computer, and as far as I can tell, the standard player is more easily accessible, at least for me. Still not sure though...

Tried it. May of the android enabled websites didn't work. I tried a crap load of them until I found that one.

If you need to use your phone in colder conditions, the Galaxy is the best choice.

Understatement!

Galaxy S2 is more durable (Gorilla glass, for example), has WAY more customization options, better hardware specs, better overall screen (true blacks, saturated colours, not that kind of washed out backlit screen the iPhone has) etc etc.

Actually, the iPhone does have Gorilla glass.

Lizard_King wrote:Just bought my first smartphone ever two days ago. Went with the Galaxy S2 for a few reasons. It did get slightly better test results than the iPhone, it was significantly cheaper (440 Euro compared to the 700 bucks for the iPhone 4S), and I don't own anything else produced by apple. Thus I would have to use iTunes, and that iCloud system they have in order to get data on the phone, because it doesn't have an USB port (iirc), and I didn't feel like doing all that.

So far I'm very happy with my little Android, but as I said, it's only been two days... ;)

I hope the Android is treating you well!

Just for the record, though: the iPhone does have a USB port, and you don't have to use the iCloud to transfer data.

Really? The iPhone has a usb-port? Since when? I alawys thought it didn't,and as far as I remember, the one my friend owns does not. But I might be mistaken.

And I'm enjoying my android so far, thanks for asking.

The iPhone does not have a USB port, Orph, but the charger lead can have a USB plug at the other end. To connect to devices.

Maybe I misunderstand what is meant by a USB port. The iPhone comes with a cable to connect to a computer via USB.

Coming from a pretty hardcore fandroid (I've owned 3 different models), depending on how badly you want a new phone I would wait a few weeks more. The new Tegra 3, 5 core phones are going to be coming in. Better battery life than the previous gen dual core and much better performance.

Plus if you're into tablets you might be interested in this, two for the price of one. One data plan, two devices. Rumor also has it that this will be able to dock into the Transformer Prime keyboard dock.

Also, in defense of the iphone. A lot of people don't know it means to be open and don't really care. They don't want to customize a device, a one size fits all works well for them. Also there are a lot of shit android devices out there, I've seen a few people pick them up and then whine about how they should have gotten an iphone, and they probably should have.

What makes you think so? If that were the case why does the iPhone glass behave very different from that of a Galaxy S2?
Also, you would think Corning has Apple listed as their product customers on their website. I could imagine Apple using some sort of Gorilla glass variant, albeit a shittier version :D

ETA: Just found this on Corning's site:
Due to customer agreements, we cannot identify all devices that feature Gorilla Glass. Your favorite device may include Gorilla Glass, even if you don't see it listed. Ask your manufacturer or retailer to learn more.

But still, the iPhone glass scratches and breaks EASILY, not so with any newer Samsung touchscreen phone, confirmed to use Gorilla Glass ;)

Have you compared them though? I ask because I don't recall if you have an iPhone as well as a Samsung or not.

I can only speak for my own experience of the iPhone: the screen has never scratched nor broken - and I have not treated it too gently. I have no screen protector, and it regularly comes into contact with metal. (e.g., I'll put the phone in my pocket, and only hours later remember that I've got my keys in there too.) And I'm clumsy enough to have dropped it numerous times. The glass on my various iPods and my old iPod Touch behaved as I would expect ordinary glass would: they got significantly scratched from much less abuse. So clearly the glass on the more recent iPhone is different from these. If it's not Gorilla Glass, it's certainly something like it.

I don't own an iPhone myself but I've had the chance to compare them various times. I think the iPhone is a decent phone, only think the Galaxy S2 is superior in many ways.

Did you accidentally drop it? After seeing various drop tests online I wouldn't try it ;) I would think that if you take care of either smartphone they'll last a long time and make the owners happy. Galaxy VS iPhone though? The former, clearly ;)

Galaxy VS Iphone

#57  Postby Ironclad » Feb 14, 2012 3:43 am

I dropped my iPhone from barely 4-6 inches and the screen shattered into a spider web pattern. Gorilla Glass, my arse! Namby-pamby glass more like.
There are whispers of the Galaxy S3, take a look on T3 magazine's website for info.
I use the i4 but recently looked into the Motorola Razr, I though this item looked wonderful, wafer thin, dual proc, HD cam... etc. Sadly the reviews are lousy. :(. It's the only other phone I like the look of.

I hear ya, I've bought a different Razr way back just because of its look.
The software was crappy (and so were most reviews, still it was #1 seller worldwide at one time) but it felt so nice to make calls with it :D Have to check out their new model.

Yes, I did accidentally drop it - many times. From different heights, on different surfaces: from carpets to concrete sidewalks. Nothing. I'm sure I'm lucky; I've seen iPhones with cracked screens. But I've also seen other phones with cracked screens - including, last week on the train - a Samsung smartphone.

I'm clumsy. And of course, I try not to be. I think you're right: take care of either smartphone and they'll last a long time (and hopefully make the owners happy!). But conversely, neither one is invincible. Any glass will break or scratch if abused enough.

One thing I should have mentioned earlier. I would highly recommend getting the galaxy Nexus instead of the Galaxy S2. The Galaxy S2 is a very nice piece of hardware but unless you want to take the route that I have, which is to install custom roms to get the latest version of the OS, you would be better off getting it. I enjoy custom ROMs but I have many a time installed a custom ROM that had serious issues(soft brick twice, crashing critical applications, and other odd mishaps) , plus you have the risk of seriously messing up your device permanently. I don't necessarily want to deter you from that route, as it can be very fun, but its something to consider.
