Can someone help me with an iPad problem please? My wife has a iPad Air MD 785B/A and has software version 12.4.5 which won’t upgrade any further. She’s convinced it’s now past it’s sell by date and needs renewing, a thought which fills me with horror as mine is only a year younger and on 13.3.1.

Does it really need replacing? Should we just put anti virus software on machine? It is used mainly on shopping channels, email and txts.
I’m actually shocked, I have a very old steam driven Samsung R780 which still works fine and on W10.

Your advice greatly appreciated.

To expand, the Air first gen is one that I own and I could still use it if I didn’t have my current Pro. It’s 64 bit which means most apps should be fine. Battery life on my Air was an issue as it was a 2012 model. For texts, email, and online shopping it should be fine. Just because you can’t update to iOS 13 doesn’t mean you should scrap it.

What he said
....and there is no need for anti-Virus ..most on Mac or iOS does more harm than any good.
There is malware and your devices should be scanned on occasion. This is free and what we use on MacOS.

Thanks for that. She’s still intent on getting a new one but is giving her ‘old’ one to our daughter who has her own digital design business so will come in handy there. I’ll put the Malwarebytes app on my own iPad so many thanks.

She does her work on a big super-dooper desktop Apple wotsit using Illustrator. Says she can find a use for the iPad though.
In all my working life the engineers always used Android for their CAD programmes. One explained that they had no choice but I’m damned if I can remember the reason why. Any idea?

Android is very recent. Windows is the most popular platform for things CAD.

Damn, I meant Windows. Just did a quick search and notice that there are cads for Apple but very few. I seem to remember engineers telling me technical reasons that Apple wasn’t suitable. Maybe I heard wrong.

My middle sister's hubby was an architect. He did everything on Macs. Always. Everything, except for CAD, that is. For that he had a MS Windows box. Too many things only AutoCAD can do, he reckoned, but AutoCAD doesn't to Apple. That was quite some years ago. The situation could well have changed by now.

Macs run any PC software natively ....just not cost effective cuz windoze boxes so cheap....

That said AutoCad finally woke up and returned to the fold

As 3D BIM (Building Information Management) technologies become more prevalent, the graphics card capabilities become more and more important. Most studios use PCs with high end gaming cards in them to manage the demand Open GL puts on them. That said, my office is a Mac environment and we use Vectorworks which is more than capable of handling the size of projects we do. When you work on large mid rise and high rise project though, you need a lot of graphic oomph. The 70 story tower with our landscape on the 10th and 13th floor podium tested the limits of our setup.

The new round of cards look promising..Radeon 5700XT and eGPU boxes are down in price.
Acceleration in Adobe is much better recently too. Especially Radeon.
That's overdue.

We’re talking the liquid cooled high end cards.
