Me - - my iPhone 5 is around that- 2012 and we still have working iPhone 4s ...just a bit too slow for modern apps.

Personally wouldn't buy apple. It's not about the brand or the prices per se though, if you want to spend all that money that's up to you. More about shoddy design and anti-competitive business practices for me though.

Funny it's about the battery in this case though. Batteries are one of the few things apple will replace over the counter and for a very reasonable price at the moment. Course if you aren't near one of their shops it would be easier to purchase a replacement battery and change it yourself. Easy enough for most brands but apple go out of their way to make sourcing a battery as hard as possible, they don't sell parts to customers to repair themselves and make it as hard as possible for third parties to supply new or refurbished parts.

As I see it, if I purchase an item I own it and can stuff it up attempting my own repairs as I see fit.

Right to repair. Now.

I’ll get my personal phone repaired. That isn’t the problem. I just can’t be without my Square reader while I do it.

And, my old iPhone 4 can’t do what I need from it. It still works fine, though. It’s never needed repair.

While we’re at it then, let’s see how many others here are actually using a six year old mobile phone.

I do have an iPhone X though. Cancer makes you go 'screw it, I'm doing whatever I want'.

I came so close to getting one but I balked at the cost. I couldn't morally justify it.

I threatened to leave my service provider as it was being offered cheaper elsewhere. Suddenly the massive price discrepancy vanished, and I'm paying the same as I did for my iPhone 6s+.

I've been with the same provider for a decade so I already get an outrageously good deal so the best they could do was still more than I was going to shell out.

I have been with mine for a similar amount of time. I've also been with my internet provider for over 10 years, and as such I get special sparkly offers on things. One of those was on the iPhone X if I changed to them. It was a case of duelling long-term service providers, which led to me getting a very silly deal indeed. Just shows you how much profit they must make on all this crap.

Ha!

Bit of a freak out this afternoon with the SIM from my old phone. The iPhone 4 carries a micro SIM. The SE takes a nano SIM. That's a fairly simple, if delicate, operation with a pair of good shears to cut it to size. It didn't fucking work when I was done cutting. Fuck.

So I thought. I was putting the fucking thing into the phone upside down. No wonder it couldn't read the SIM. Flipped it over, all is well.

The_Metatron wrote:A strange sequence of events led to this.

When I started my business, I reused a retired iPhone 4 for my business phone. That works just fine as a phone, but little else. For navigation, dash camera, and the Square app (won’t run on the old iPhone 4), I was using my personal iPhone 6, which I carry as well as my business phone.

The battery in my iPhone 6 is failing. So, I need that battery replaced. But, I can’t do without the Square app while the phone is away being repaired.

I figured that I got good service from my old iPhone 4. But, it just won’t do what I need from it, so time to replace it. I need to separate the problem with my personal phone from my business.

So, a shiny new iPhone SE, black (space grey, whatever), 32GB memory, is on the way for $350.

I’m deeply interested in it’s value, which I’ll judge by it’s price and performance, weighed against what I need it to do for my business: email, sms, telephony, point of sale, work photography (in and out inspections, work in progress, etc), and navigation.

Didn’t know you could hack a SIM like that.

Yeah, they're all basically the same electronics, just in different sized pieces of plastic. Consequently you can clip the smaller versions out of larger ones and conversely stick a shell around the smaller ones if need be.

Those who had early digital phones might remember the ones that were credit card sized.

When I picked up my Lumia 930, the guy had a special chomping tool that took my micro SIM and made it into a nano.

I fucked up a SIM by cutting it down once. I’m glad it wasn’t this one. My provider isn’t local.

My six year old iPhone 4S is going strong. It's a spare now but my daughter is using it, after her Android phone got stolen. I don't thnk she wants to go back to Android.

I think that says something about the never ending quest for thinner instruments, therefore thinner batteries.

However, in light of this, I have two iPhones 4, that are excess to my needs. One of the microphones has failed on one of them, so the speaker phone doesn’t function. The other (my old phone), has a failed power button, a common fault with that model of iPhone.

They can be had for the asking.

A thing the SE does that my 6 does not: It shows the lock screen for about ten seconds if I pick it up. Just pick it up. I like that.

Ha!

This thing seems to favor large movements to show the lock screen. Rolling it in my hand gently does nothing, until I move the phone to a better viewing position. It isn’t just touch sensitive, it’s trying to guess if you’re looking at it.

Wouldn’t it be fun to step through the coding for that?

Apple... Apple, Apple, Apple.
When will people stop falling for their slick sales PR? Not everything about Apple products and services is bad, but generally speaking, they stink. They really stink.
