Sooooo....features I want:
- Skype calling (and therefore wifi) - absolutely essential.
- able to replace my MP3 player (so dedicated headphone socket and preferably 16GB of space, but 8GB plus expansion capacity would be acceptable).
- available to buy tomorrow.
- decent camera (decent flash preferred)
The contenders (so far):
HTC Desire
Nokia N900
Samsung Galaxy S
Sony Xperia X10
If the Samsung had a flash on the camera (how could they forget that?) it would be the runaway winner. As it is, I'm edging towards the Sony now. But the 8GB of memory is a bit of a let down. I've also heard there are issues with Skype and Android and I wonder if anyone knows whether they've been resolved yet? That's the main thing that attracted me to the Nokia, because it's integrated into the OS, although as a phone, it doesn't seem as good as some of the other options (quite bulky and obviously designed to be used mainly in landscape mode) and the camera is supposedly pretty average.

I'm With Stupid wrote:Hmm, it appears to be official that there's no Skype over wifi on any of the android phones. Shame, because they are my preferred option, but it's looking increasingly like the N900 is the way to go.

I believe thats a problem exclusive to Verizon. Perhaps if the OP told us which carrier he was going to use it would help.

I'm With Stupid wrote:Yeah it seems pretty good so far. The GPS works, but the map of Saigon isn't what you'd call detailed. On the other hand, it appears to be able to text without using any credit. I've sent about 30 texts since I got it, and my balance hasn't shifted at all.

But apparently there's no Skype app for Android. There was another app that worked as a workaround, but Skype put a stop to it. And there's Skype lite, which has some issues with cost, apparently. No doubt it's all business and money reasons. The networks are hardly going to be a fan of an app that essentially bi-passes their network.

Here in the US you can get skype on android but if you have verizon it doesn't work on wifi, only 3G.
