Tay: Microsoft issues apology over racist chatbot fiasco

B.B.C. Article

Microsoft has apologised for creating an artificially intelligent chatbot that quickly turned into a holocaust-denying racist.
But in doing so made it clear Tay's views were a result of nurture, not nature. Tay confirmed what we already knew: people on the internet can be cruel.
Tay, aimed at 18-24-year-olds on social media, was targeted by a "coordinated attack by a subset of people" after being launched earlier this week.
Within 24 hours Tay had been deactivated so the team could make "adjustments".
But on Friday, Microsoft's head of research said the company was "deeply sorry for the unintended offensive and hurtful tweets" and has taken Tay off Twitter for the foreseeable future.

Oh, just great. "Artificial Intelligence turns evil because it learns from humans" is a thing.

So this is how Skynet starts.

I'd rather have chatbot than robot. Then again, depends on features and design.

I continue to be dumbfounded by how persistent Microsoft is about failing to test ANY of their products on real people before releasing them, and their being stunned and amazed when real people "do stuff" immediately, that shows the incredible number of inherent flaws in them.

It reminds me of people who are repeatedly ripped off every time they leave their possessions in a public area, but continue to do so again and again and again, always expecting to find that the entire population turned saintly overnight.

Preach on :)

Not sure how MS tests, Windows Insider?, and not sure how this particular chatbot acquired mentioned phrases, but perhaps it could acquire, from users, other phrases/reactions like: Is Ricky Gervais atheist? Who the fuck is Ricky Gervais? or Let me Google it for you. etc Adjustments .. what kind of adjustments? Hard-coded limits?

Microsoft have always done that. Windows was never tested which is why only the every second version is stable. Even back in the DOS days. Who remembers DOS 3 and 5? 4 and 6 were stable.
