Isn't it about time we had one? I've been getting very lax in my presentation of late, and I really need something to sort it out. It's been ages.

True enough. I really should whip something up.
How about you people give us some possible topics?

Well, history of science hasn't been much touched on. Key predictions and how they were validated. Explanation of deep scientific principles. There are three to go at, and all broad enough to have lots of scope regardless of the interests of the contributor. I'm sure others can come up with more.

I just went back to some early science writing stuff, including the stuff that still appears on the RDF forum archive. I had a shufty at my first entry, and I think there might be a book in that topic. Will give it some thought.

Edit: Just realised that 'history of science' was the first topic out of the gate. That's what happens when twats eradicate entire posting histories, isn't it?

How about connections between theories that seem only distantly related at first sight?

Indeed.

Keep the ideas coming. I have exams to do this week, but we'll put up an announcement and get it started soon-ish.

Why don't folks just write up their thoughts on a subject and start a thread? W don't need no stinkin' special thread.

Obviously there is a lot of value in success but I'd be very interested in seeing articles about serious scientific hypothesis that failed, how they were demonstrated to be incorrect, the reaction of those invested in the hypothesis and what happened after.

I like this. Loads of such stories from the history of neuroscience.

I could do something on the ether hypothesis and how the Michelson-Morley experiment falsified it... Or maybe about the Earth being in the centre of the Universe and how people like Tycho, Copernicus and Galileo showed that the Earth moves. :)

I could do something about how people used to think that the earth moved and rotated, and then found some ancient writings that stated that it was stationary.

But Brainman told me that that wasn't a failed hypothesis?! I don't know what to believe any more :(

Indeed. A good one. I'm torn between Dan's and susu's. Both excellent topics.

Incidentally, we should probably at some point air the essays written for the competition in progress during the night of the long knives, even if only so that they're posted.

Well, some of those participants aren't around any more. I guess just posting them in a topic and me linking to that topic in the Hall of Fame.
