Which nation has the most interesting/influential history?

#1  Postby jamest » Oct 11, 2010 11:24 pm

Just curious about this. Wondered how people viewed such questions from places well-distanced from where I live.

Firstly, I apologise if I've omitted a serious contender to the 'prize'. Clearly, I'm a victim of my own geographical location and historical/political brainwashing. Not to mention my relative ignorance of other countries/continents.

The other point that I wish to make, is that I deliberately offered the option of England or Britain. For anyone familiar with British history, this should need no explanation. That is, 'Britain' has only been a nation for a relatively-short time... and many would argue that it has its roots in 'England'. On the other hand, many would argue that 'Britain' was the nation that held all of the power synonymous with the 'British Empire'.

... There may be similar stories that need to be told about other nations/states.

Anyway, feel free to tell me why 'Tasmania', for example, has the most interesting/influential history. I'm all for learning something new.

For my own part, leaving aside any brainwashing about my own nation, I would opt for Israel/Holy Land, closely followed by Italy (Roman Empire).

Africa's been quite influential in an evolutionary sense.
For me, the value of a climb is the sum of three inseparable elements, all equally important: aesthetics, history, and ethics

Apparently - if one considers the origin of humanity to be more significant than the origin of 'evolution'.

I'll go with Britain. Most influential inventions up to today (Computers, TV, radio etc).
What's the world language? English. Politics? British Empire. I could go on...

I went with Greece. So many scientific, philosophical, linguistic and religious themes and branches that now pervade all of the other European and European-descended cultures have their roots there. China is a wonderful contendor too, but my (limited) knowledge of history suggests that most of their cultural advances stayed isolated there and the modern cultures of the West mostly descend from European traditions.

But perhaps I'll learn something here!

If it comes to interesting, Italy, hands down. I can't think of an uninteresting period of Italian history up until the end of WW II.

Influence is more difficult to address, given how everything in history is built upon what comes before, I guess it has to be Mesopotamia, excluding Africa as there is no history there, only prehistory.

I voted france .We obviously are the center and the inspiration of secular humanism , fine arts , philosophy , enlightment, culture , and chauvinism.
Between what i think , what i want to say ,what i believe i say ,what i say , what you want to hear , what you hear ,what you understand...there are lots of possibilities that we might have some problem communicating. But let's try anyway.

It'd certainly wouldn't make much sense if I thought America was or wasn't something, in spite of never being there.

India. We did absolutely nothing for the past 10000 years or so. Just smirked at the pointlessness of it all.

Australian history ftw.

For the first 40000 years, the aboriginal people of Australia lived off the land, building huts and spears. They even came into contact with the Indonesians to perform trades.

Then white man settled here 150 years ago.

OH wait, i forgot to mention the global flood and how the aboriginals dealt with it.

Just to let you know, I changed the poll. You can now vote for 2 countries... and you can change your mind at a later date.

I thought that many people would vote for their own country, but I'm interested in what their interests are beyond that.
They came, they saw, they concurred.

Cheating a bit to consider an entire continent though, isn't it?

I'm trying to be objective but Industrial Revolution Britain, and the formation of British Empire, keeps coming up as a real winner for me as a force for both much that is good and bad in the modern world.
