Thanking God for sparing you in a natural disaster is like
sending a thank-you note to a serial killer for stabbing the family next door

Question: If you could live forever, would you and why? Best Answer

It's because beards contain semen - the Greeks knew that!

http://www.sbl-site.org/publications/ar ... icleId=271

The apostle Paul wanted women to cover their tresses while praying because he — like the rest of Hellenistic culture then — believed that the long hair of adult females was the sexual equivalent of male testicles, according to a newly published study.

As I understand it, most of these assertions are best tracked back to the ancient societies who first proposed them, and by doing this it becomes clearer we are attempting to talk with people who do not actually share our basic assumptions about how stuff works.

We would be far better trying to get people to explain their ideas and where they come from, using Socratic methods, like why do you want to be a suicide bomber, to help establish the caliphate.

Why do you want to help establish the caliphate?

So that Jesus returns in the last days...

Why do you wear a hijab?

It is modest.

Why?

Because hair contains semen and is therefore private.

(These statements although shocking, are easily traced back and are regularly confirmed in various fundi websites.)

But I am arguing against this! It is rational if you are starting from Ancient Greek medical ideas! Geocenticity was not barking mad, it was logical with the tools and ideas available.

Thus responses should be rational, not emotive!

I know you are replying to the op! I think it isn't barking mad but rational if you are working from a strange mix of ancient and medieval assumptions!

So the problem is more to ask why are they avoiding modernism and 16th century Italian anatomy?

Because their Imams tell them to? It cannot be rational to spout what these people spout, without doing the minimum research required. Theres so much information about these days, it beggars belief anyone like this exists.

Because they're barking mad and put the demented ramblings of a 6th century plagiarist above and beyond rationalism and modern science. That the mass of Muslims have been got that way is a cause for regret and for criticism of those who have made them that way.

And how does that sort of comment enable any change or dialogue?

Precisely - wrong diagnoses are dangerous. It is amusing watching people's behaviour who believe this.

Imprecise: you don't say what behaviour/belief is amusing. Do you mean mediaeval superstitions or the rejection of same? Mediaeval superstitions may be amusing if viewed through a historical lens but they're not the least bit funny when used to drive people's lives in the present day.
