Blogger fired from language school over "homophonia"

#1  Postby NamelessFaceless » Jul 31, 2014 2:23 pm

This has got to be the stupidest thing I've seen in a long time.

Homophones, as any English grammarian can tell you, are words that sound the same but have different meanings and often different spellings — such as be and bee, through and threw, which and witch, their and there.

This concept is taught early on to foreign students learning English because it can be confusing to someone whose native language does not have that feature.

But when the social-media specialist for a private Provo-based English language learning center wrote a blog explaining homophones, he was let go for creating the perception that the school promoted a gay agenda.

Clarke Woodger's teachers were obviously niggardly with his education.

From the article:

"Now our school is going to be associated with homosexuality," Woodger complained, according to Torkildson, who posted the exchange on his Facebook page."

Though being homophobic is all right. :what:

Perhaps Woodger is upset because his name sounds like a slang term for a penis?

Well, now that school is going to be associated with industrial grade ignorance as well as bigotry. A lot of people are ok with the latter, but industrial grade ignorance isn't exactly the best thing for a school to be associated with.

Homophonia Strikes Again in Utah!

#8  Postby GT2211 » Aug 05, 2014 5:16 am

But when the social-media specialist for a private Provo-based English language learning center wrote a blog explaining homophones, he was let go for creating the perception that the school promoted a gay agenda.

Tim Torkildson says after he wrote the blog on the website of his employer, Nomen Global Language Center, his boss and Nomen owner Clarke Woodger, called him into his office and told him he was fired.

As Torkildson tells it, Woodger said he could not trust him and that the blog about homophones was the last straw.

Tbf it's a slippery slope. I got into homophones aged about 5. By 8 I was doing synonyms maybe ten or twelve times a day. I really hit rock bottom with the onomatopoeia though...

Utah teacher fired for teaching homophones

#18  Postby I'm With Stupid » Aug 09, 2014 3:41 am

Story

An education blogger in Utah is out of a job today after writing a blog post explaining "homophones" for the Nomen Global Language Center.

Tim Torkildson said he was fired by his boss and NGLC owner, Clarke Woodger, for promoting a gay agenda.

If you need a quick reminder from elementary school English class, a homophone is a word or words that are pronounced like another word but varies in spelling or definition, like "to, too, and two."

My favourite bit was when he was trying to justify the decision by claiming that it was nothing to do with homophobia, and said his students weren't ready for "advanced concepts" like homophones. Advanced concepts that I'm pretty sure they've covered in Sesame Street on occasion.

no no no no no no no... They can't be that dumb. They looked up the word saw it had nothing to do with gays, but went ahead and fired him for it being too advanced...

Ugh.

Obviously a serious story but there was a rather humorous aside to it since one of the examples given was ant and aunt
and someone over at the other place said they would have sacked them just for that. But that notwithstanding however
it is sad that this is happening in Twenty Fourteen. Similar to that other example in Texas where it was decided against
teaching algebra because of the unfamiliarity with the symbols which were not American. And as I stated then : do they
not realise that the number system is Indian and actually predates the discovery of America by many millennia. Ditto all
the Greek symbols too. What makes this even more sad is that it is happening in the most advanced nation in the world
A MIND IS LIKE A PARACHUTE : IT DOES NOT WORK UNLESS IT IS OPEN
