So true. I remember when I was in Chennai, the auto-driver was speaking in English but was too reluctant to speak in Hindi! How weird, na?

Linguistic tribalism, basically. A surprisingly popular viewpoint down south is one which sees Hindi as being imposed. The fact that English was brought in as part of the colonial administrative setup well before Hindi was chosen as the national language may have something to do with how prevalent this viewpoint is.

Not really. Just that I expected everyone to speak the national language. So it felt odd the first time I went to Chennai. I got used to it later.

GenesForLife wrote:Shouldn't really matter, Punter, I have at various times been accused of being verbose, tedious, difficult to understand et cetera, hasn't deterred me.

People closer to me, including my sister, also share the same opinion, which bothers me a bit. Though some part of it may be inspired from jealousy. Kidding.

Of late, though, after some advice taken from here, I have been less conscious about my grammar, and have completely stopped looking at grammar ebooks. I listen to a lot of audio books now (all on sales management) and this might help more than before.
