More men speaking in girls' 'dialect', study shows

#1  Postby JVRaines » Dec 06, 2013 11:50 pm

More young men in California rise in pitch at the end of their sentences when talking, new research shows. This process is known as "uptalk" or "valleygirl speak" and has in the past been associated with young females, typically from California or Australia. But now a team says that this way of speaking is becoming more frequent among men. The findings were presented at the Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in California.

BBC

Wow, that's really annoying? You know, those people who make every sentence sound like a question? It's like they're insecure and need to keep you glued to every sentence they utter? It just grinds your ears down to a pulp after a few minutes?

Of course, the women have moved on. Their current vogue is the "creaky voice" or glottal fry imposed on the end of every sentence. I can't decide which is more obnoxious.

Like, cool?
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

I wouldn't call it a girl dialect, it's just some valley girls, what ever the fuck that is. What's the creaky voice?
Я пью за разоренный дом,
За злую жизнь мою,
За одиночество вдвоем,
И за тебя я пью, -
За ложь меня предавших губ,
За мертвый холод глаз,
За то, что мир жесток и груб,
За то, что Бог не спас.

Oddly enough, those three talking all morning just in their normal voice might get on some people's nerves.

The every sentence sounding like a question thing also burns my ass. What the hell is it with that?

Seriously, seriously? (Channelling Grey's Anatomy here)

Here's a somewhat more erudite analysis of the vocal fry vogue.
