No to Nynorsk: Norwegian county of Rogaland moving towards doing away with Nynorsk in favour of Bokmål in order to strengthen the Norwegian language

Nynorsk is in danger of losing the fight in the county of Rogaland in Vestland. Only one in four school students goes to school using Nynorsk in Rogaland today; of the 60 000 primary students in Rogaland, around 45 000 use Bokmål. Urbanization in the former Nynorsk county means that the Mållaget (Nynorsk federation) is at risk of giving up the fight against Bokmål.

According to the leader of the Mållaget in Rogaland (Kirsten Tegle Bryne): "We cannot get the entire Norwegian population, that 75 percent, to write Nynorsk. We can just forget about that. What is important now is to strengthen the Norwegian language and culture."

In traditional Nynorsk communities like Rennesøy and Klepp there is more and more bokmål. According to June Horpestad from a kindergarten in Klepp: "Most write in Bokmål. There are only two, three out of fourteen students that will use Nynorsk."

The Mållaget believes that Rogaland is about to become a city-county (i.e. more urbanized). More from Tegle Bryne: "There is a large movement to the county. I believe that we are in a fight against the English language, at least in the workplace. That makes Nynorsk the losing party."

I had to post this, it was so bizarre seeing it on reddit. :loco:

As established by law and governmental policy, there are two official forms of written Norwegian – Bokmål (literally "book language") and Nynorsk (literally "new Norwegian"). Historically, Bokmål is a Norwegianised variety of Danish ( Norway was in Union with Denmark for quite a while), while Nynorsk is a language form based on Norwegian dialects and puristic opposition to Danish (Nynorsk arouse after a nationalistic blossoming when we were freed from the Danes in 1814(Napoleon war)).

These two languages has been at war ever since, and we've been stuck with two Norwegian languages to learn in school. Considering we also learn English, and we learn either French or German, it is really a waste of school resources.

I'm guessing there's a lot of happy school children in my county now.

What is the point of Nynosk? Pretty much everyone writes Bokmål; what's the point of having a different system? All it does it make things harder for us foreigners trying to learn Norwegian

There really is no point, much better to kill one of them, and Bokmål is the clear winner.

Sorry to ask what is probably a stupid question - but are there two standard forms of spoken Norwegian too? In addition to regional dialects of course.

I burleeve (though I may be wrong) that nynosk and bokmål are mainly used for writing; most people will speak in their regional dialect, but write in either nynosk or bokmål. :ask:

^^yoo is correct

They are two written forms, but you pronounce them as you've written them of course. There are some differences, some different words, grammatical differences, but not more different than dialects. We speak more like Nynorsk on the west coast, and they speak Bokmål in the east (Oslo-area).
Think of it as having to learn to write English and Texan. :loco:

Eg er ikkje ein nynorsk mann og eg vil berre seie at forsvinnar nynorsken, så vil eg feire i sju lange vekar!
(I just realized I haven't even written nynorsk in a very very long time)

I can truly say I hated learning nynorsk in school, kind of strange since my actual dialect is more in line with nynorsk than with bokmål but it sounds wrong. It's an artificial language with linguistic constructions that are completely whacked.

I like it much better when you can write whole sentences using only single letters:
Æ e i A æ å!

There is some history of the Danish letters introduced, or forced on Norwegians long time back. In fact the official language was Danish, in print.

I thought the differences between Bokmål and Nynorsk, (and maybe Danish) were so small it could be considered the differences between English and Scots. Fortunately for us, Scots lost a few centuries ago.

If Nynorsk is pronounced "Nee-nor-sk" it should definitely die out for just having a stupid sounding name

The "ny" is ponounced like "knee", the "no" is like "not" without the t on the end, and the "rsk" is pronounced "shk", but I can't think of any english words with that sound in them...
