The word "bigot" has lost all validity I think

#1  Postby Keep It Real » Nov 24, 2017 5:51 pm

Is one a bigot if one is intolerant of conservatism/drug addiction/self harm/republicanism/murder/AGW denial etc ad infinitum? Get the point? Anybody with a remotely robust moral compass is a bigot then. So the word bigot is nonsense basically. Thoughts?

I never said they were. In fact I expressly stated they were not bigotry.

Then I offerered you a bromide in my second statement.

Oh I fucking hate those big trees. Waving their branches around like mangled spasmodic arms in the winding their gnarled bark trunks making spooky face shapes in the dark. Burn them, cut them down, make stuff out of them!!!
The Bible is full of interest. It has noble poetry in it; and some clever fables; and some blood-drenched history; and some good morals; and a wealth of obscenity; and upwards of a thousand lies.

You need inverted commas around the word "bigot" in your thread title.

I am the word bigot. I am still valid.

Sorry laklak but KIR need KIR.

Bigotry - intolerance towards those who hold different opinions from oneself.

Right so it fails in that respect too then - because the clued up always blame the sin/not the sinner - so technically bigotry is impossible for such people as well as being unavoidable if one takes a different definition eg. Bigotry - intolerance toward opinions or actions one disagrees with.

Some people do seem to insist on that definition. I find it difficult to be intolerant of such opinions, since I don't know what the point of policing people semantically would be. If finding the correct way to perceive bigotry has the potential to save the world, even via asserting that the term is meaningless, have at it, my friend.

I have little inclination to treat this as some kind of intellectual crisis. Call my attitude intolerance if you like, or call it bigotry, if you're really worked up about it. I gain no sense of caution from finding that somebody at the other end of an internet pipe is really worked up about something.

take republicanism; AGW denial and flat earth belief. And those are just some of the opinions most of us here are intolerant towards. The list of actions most people are intolerant towards would be truly epic.

Can't I start a thread that doesn't claim to hold the keys of a panacea for a change? lol ;)

I'm not really worked up about it - it's just irritating and should be addressed imo.

Yes? And? How did that get mixed up with bigotry? I'm used to treating the latter as intolerance of someone based on facts of their birth, and I don't much feel like arguing that with you, should you feel irritated about the distinction. I think it's a pretty fair distinction to make, and I don't think it treats anyone unfairly, unless it crosses some line of intolerance you're willing to say I've crossed and can make the fucking case.

Just for the record, I don't think serial dickweedery is identical to bigotry. It might be identical to serial fuckwittery, but I don't know. I don't make the rules.
