A question for medical bods...

#1  Postby devogue » Aug 27, 2011 12:37 pm

I am on warfarin for life after heart valve replacement.

Between today and a Liver Function test on Wednesday I need to do everything possible to lower my ALT/AST between now and then (it's borderline high - 47 U/L). I need this to pass a medical for emigration.

There are loads of things like milk thistle, dandelion etc which claim to "detox" the liver and get it in good shape, but I can't take these supplements because of the warfarin.

The last alcoholic drink I had was on Tuesday night and I'm drinking lots of water and eating plenty of fruit and good food. Is there anything else I can do?

Cheers!
It's PETUNIAS TIME again, folks!!!

Ummm, afaik only time will work in this regard. Don't take 'liver cleansers' .
If your result is over the line, stay dry for another week and repeat as a second opinion.
What I have heard used for a over the line result is a quick admission to the reviewing practitioner that you have just had a 'big weekend' due to a family occasion etc. as for the reason your levels are elevated. I wouldn't admit that these are your dry results... Not suggesting you lie or anything.. well maybe fudge it a bit.. :P
All the best.

Do not drink any alcohol, avoid soda & high fructose corn syrup & artifical sweetners. Do not take any acetaminophen (tylenol). Drink lots of water, stay hydrated before the test. Don't screw around with supplements, you risk interfering with your wafarin and screwing up your INR. It's not worth a stroke.

Eat a low carb diet, skip bread, pastas, rice etc. Low carb diets can lower serum ALT levels.
