Cancer is a fungus

#1  Postby Doubtdispelled » Apr 22, 2011 1:41 pm

There are times when - me thinking that at my time of life, I surely must have heard it all - I can still be surprised by the things people say, and apparently believe.

An acquaintance has just been through a horrible time, seeing her ex-partner and father of her boys lose his life to aggressive cancer in just a few short weeks. Obviously I sympathised, but I was at a loss for words when she began telling me that she believes cancer is caused by a fungus. I had never heard of this barmy idea before, and I didn't know what to say.

It seems it's all down to this guy, who has written a book and is busy promoting bicarbonate of soda as a cure for all cancers.

:nono:

Has anyone here heard of this?

That's nothing. My mother's friend believes that she's found an ointment that reveals skin cancer. If you rub the creme on a lump and it turns red, you have skin cancer.

Not the first time I've heard this.

My friend was applying for a Medical Microbiology MSc and sent me her personal statement to look over...I quote from the original:

'Funguses [sic] are not as big a problem I would say but still quite important especially in the cancer department. I am a strong believer that many cancers are caused by fungus.'

I checked with my dad, who is an oncologist, and he said it was complete rubbish. Needless to say I completely scrapped her original statement and wrote her a new one. However, I've refused to give her any more help, because, although she is my friend and it is sad to say, her merits definitely do not lie within the realm of science. In the same personal statement she said that we evolved directly from E. coli. She got through the first stage thanks to the personal statement I wrote for her, sadly for her I doubt very much if she'll get any further off her own back.

I feel bad for saying it about my friend...but if you saw the original statement, you'd say it too.

The really interesting thing though is how, despite all the evidence that we have for what causes and drives cancer, including whole fucking truckloads of papers documenting what happens to cellular signalling and tumour suppressor genes and so on, people still end up believing things like the idea of Cancer being caused by Candida (just because of a whitish appearance, wtf?)

Sure, people may be desperate to find themselves cured and may be aware that a lot of tumours manage to evolve resistance to traditional therapeutic paradigms and may therefore succumb (both literally and metaphorically) to woo, but it still doesn't explain the fact that people somehow buy into the lugubrious nonsense that cancer may be caused by fungi (FFS).

It is frightening and I don't know how many lives will be lost thanks to the gullibility of people and the dishonest fuckwits that choose to exploit them.

He's been found using faked testimonies (including one from his mistress). Cancer isn't a fungus. Let's say you get a days old dead rabbit which in fact had been fatally injured by just a coyote and then there was fungus growing in the damaged tissues.

Some cancers, like cervical cancer, are caused by viruses. But I've never seen a paper describing a cancer being caused by a fungus.
