Fasting Without Food & Water

#1  Postby Sovereign » Jan 07, 2012 8:30 pm

So some people I know are doing a church shutin and they are fasting for 3 days without food and water. Now if they were all in tip top shape I wouldn't be so worried but they're not. I know humans can go fairly long without food and for about a week without water but for someone who is out of shape, how long can they go before it gets dangerous?

This will depend on their condition and the climate, basic rule is death occurs 3 minutes without breathing, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food.. some individuals can do far longer depending on the circumstances, some will die or suffer serious organ damage under the circumstances you describe. Hopefully they will cheat and drink something.

I hope so too otherwise St. Louis is going to have a news story of people dying while fasting in church. "God will give me spiritual food" was basically the response I got.

Well spiritual food is really not the issue unless they are diabetic.. Spiritual water is what they need, fasting without water is quite dangerous, although cheating is common, let's hope they brush their teeth well with lots of 'rinsing'.

Bobby Sands survived 66 days without food during the second Irish hunger strike.

In terms of the amount of calories the average person stores as fat, that's not too surprising.

Aye. It might do for quite a lot of people to do a little bit of fasting now and then, though not drinking water is a very silly idea.

I'll be impressed if they can go a three days without water. They'll all be severely dehydrated by the 3rd day, and will most likely all need an IV to have the water put into their blood stream directly so one of them pass out and die.

Edit: You should tell them that this sort of fasting is very un-healthy. Maybe point out that since it's not healthy, their god wouldn't like it very much either.

None of them went 3 days without water. They gave in on day 2.

They were stupid to even try.

Even if there was a heaven, I imagine their god would meet them at the gates and say "You lot are too fucking stupid to be on my team. Get out."
