HIV Vaccine

#1  Postby Acetone » Dec 21, 2011 2:54 am

The vaccine, developed by researchers at the University of Western Ontario, has received a green light from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for clinical human trials.

Beginning in January, the vaccine will be given to 40 healthy people with HIV to test its safety.

Dr. Chil-Yong Kang, professor of virology at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario, called the FDA approval a “milestone.”

Indeed, hopefully they are able to continue through to the second phase on clinical human trials to see how effective it actually is etc..

I'm kind of envious, wish I went to Western and was able to take part or at least witness firsthand the research/processes to follow.

Though I applaud the development of this vaccine, I'm left wondering who is willing to go through the tests... I doubt I would be willing to be a test subject.

It'll be people who are already predisposed to contracting HIV. I would do it if I were. The worst that could happen is you contract the disease... the best that can happen, and the most likely to happen, would be that the vaccine moves forward and saves many people... which is only possible after clincal trials.

I'm not sure who you are referring to by "presdisposed to contracting HIV"?

Even despite people having high-risk profiles, it takes courage to sign up for this. I tip my hat for those involved.

Is there any evidence the vaccine actually works? I don't think just triggering an immune response is sufficient since people live with the disease for so long without a natural immune response developing and overcoming it.

I don't know how your Food and Drug Administration works, but if it's been approved for human testing, then it would be a fair bet that there enough proof to warrant expanding the trial to humans.

One of the latest trials in Thailand showed a 31% reduction in infection in comparison to a placebo, the data looks legit. It's not a great figure, but it's something. With any luck, this news will be a kick up the bum for drug companies to be even more transparent with ALL the data they are using.

When I consider this for an answer, back in the 80’s it would have been the Western gay males and haemophiliacs, but now in the 11’s it would be black Africans and Catholics in Southern Africa who comes to mind.

No, it will be people who already have it, but don't have any symptoms (yet):

the vaccine will be given to 40 healthy people with HIV to test its safety

That's why they need to do a study.

Isn't that just to test safety, rather than efficacy? At some point, they'll have to give it to sero-negative people, and see if it prevents them from becoming sero-positive, if I understand correctly.

Ah yes my bad, I thought this was just about the study mentioned in the OP, but I see Acetone had already brought up the next phase ... this will teach me to post when I'm too sleepy to read properly
