So.. Mouthwash...

I've heard wildly differing claims about it, ranging from "It's good for you." to "It kills your teeth."

All I could think of that could possibly harmful is that it's antiseptic and hence might upset the microbial fauna in your mouth. Then again, killing off microbes is pretty much the point. Anyone care to enlighten me?

I'm sure that I heard on QI that it was never invented as mouthwash. Someone came up with it and marketed it as a variety of different things before hitting on the mouthwash idea.

Possible. I think Lysterine was intended to be a detergent, or something. That doesn't really answer my question, though.

Can't comment on mouthwash other than it often being disgusting in taste.
If your motivation though is to enhance oral hygiene, get a good tongue cleaner. Cheap, simple, effective. World of a difference :D So brush and floss teeth, scrape tongue, done. Anything else is overkill in my book.

Well, I've had some success in using it to make mouth sores heal faster (I always get one if I accidentally bite my lip... >.<) I guess that's kinda to be expected from it's antiseptic nature. :P No idea how good it is for your teeth though.

I can't believe we don't have any dentists or anything here.

I've used it to clear up gum problems, but I don't think I'd use it all the time. It says on the actual bottle that it can cause discolouration of the teeth. Plus if you do it at night you wake up in the morning with your mouth feeling like you consumed large amounts of alcoholic beverages.

I'd avoid regular use, as it kills the beneficial bacteria responsible for keeping fungus and harmful bacteria in check. Used the stuff every day for a month or two and ended up with hairy tongue, which kinda defeats the point of trying to freshen your breath.
