Global Atheist Convention - Melbourne 2010

#1  Postby Kiwi » Feb 26, 2010 9:44 am

The Global Atheist Convention will be held 12-14 March in Melbourne, Australia
http://www.atheistconvention.org.au/

I wonder of ex habitues of RD.net such as myself, who have found their way here, are there any plans to meet prior to the conference or during it ?

I am going over. There may be discussions on other boards, or in the lost posts.

RD will be speaking on the Sunday, he is speaking in Auckland, New Zealand on the Saturday.

I saw that Aesthetic Atheist was organising Conference tables, is she here ?

Hi to all.

There's 2 tables of RDF people arranged for the Saturday dinner.

I'm getting together with Starr, Aesthetic Atheist, Goldenmane, Mr & Mrs Witticism and whoever else for lunch on the Friday and then bumming around together until the conference registration opens.

Australian Atheist Convention, Melbourne 12-14 March

#5  Postby Praxis » Feb 28, 2010 10:03 pm

Please use this thread as a central discussion point for all things GAC related. For anyone who doesn't realise, it's the poster formerly known as Aesthetic Atheist here, with my new (actually very old!) name.

So ... only 12 days to go now!

Much excitement  :drunk:

Who's gonna be there? Both from the forum and speaking? Isn't Peter Singer a lecturer there? Will he be there?

Yep, Peter Singer is also speaking on the Sunday (same day as RD), now called Secular Sunday. So many fantastic speakers - I just can't wait

We should do something to promote this site - might be plenty of members who don't even realize the old one's gone down yet.

Anyone in a position to rustle up some t-shirts?

And me. I think dinner at the table is going to be a bit of a different experience to the one I was originally anticipating, eh?

If t-shirts for rationalskepticism.org are happening I need XL. What about some business cards with the URL and some title or description?

Sorry Dan - how could I forget you!

Anyway, before anyone goes getting merch organised, you need to see this:

Please note: Many groups contacted the Global Atheist Convention to arrange tables to display their organisational literature. We offered a very low (cost) rate to like-minded not-for-profit organisations that arranged a table. Unfortunately, allocations for all display tables are full so those wishing to display their group’s literature will need to arrange with others who already have organised table space.

As stated on the FAQ page of the Convention website and in the email that has been sent to all ticket purchasers, attendees are not permitted to hand out literature within the Convention area. The GAC Committee has established this rule to be fair to the exhibitors that have purchased table space, to prevent annoyance to attendees and to control litter for which we are responsible.

Thank you for your understanding.

This is entirely fair enough. Don't worry though, with so many attending, pen/paper and word-of-mouth will do very nicely for promotion of pretty much anything!

So glad you made it here Kiwi! I did get your PM on the now-defunct RDF but couldn't respond given the flood settings to one every six hours or so, and I had four PMs and had to choose which one to respond to urgently. A six hour setting makes contacting everyone you need to veeeeerrrrry slow.

I've organised the tables and submitted the list a few weeks ago to the organisers - we're full up with 20 people so sorry 'bout that. You'll have to sit with a bunch of random strangers! Oh, hang on ... :ask:

Can't wait to see everyone! I hope everyone will wear name tags of some sort with forum name and real name on it otherwise no one will know who's who!

I'm flying in around midday on Friday. I figure it will be around 3pm by the time I get into the city and check-in. That gives me plenty of time to catch up before the 7pm registration.

It should be fun, but I have a suspicion I'm going to be worn out by Sunday night.

Pack plenty of Barocca & I highly recommend Liva-Tone from the health-food store. It might be purely placebo, but I swear that stuff makes me feel great, even if I've had my drinking boots on! There will be no piking out early on Saturday night, do you hear me; NO PIKING!!
