#1  Postby talkietoaster » May 24, 2012 6:53 am

Hi all,

For those that may live in Essex, UK and like the opportunity to sit in on a debate and this could be your opportunity. Depending on commitments I will be going. Also to note, depending on audience participation afterwards it can finish between 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

Panel debate series: Religion as a force in Society: for Good or Ill?
Rachel Moss - May 23rd, 10:37

Friday 1 June 2012, 7:00pm, Chelmsford campus

As part of the 'Altogether now festival' we are proud to host a series of panel debates.

Religion as a force in Society: for Good or ill?

What role should religion play in a modern society? Does it underlie the values we all share? How far should religious institutions be entwined with the machinery of the state? We will explore both the good works and moral guidance that faith can bring to a modern, secular society but also the division, intolerance and conflict that it can cause.

Members of the panel include:

Blaise Egan - Essex Humanists
Ray White - Essex Humanists
Reverend Robert Wiggs - The Bishop's advisor on Asylum and Refugees
Sidra Naeem - Islamic Representative on Essex SACRE and a teacher in Primary Education.

Light refreshments will be served from 7:00pm.

Sounds like fun. I should be able to make it down from Colchester. How many people can I bring? My other half will be interested, I'm sure. Her sister and partner live in Chelmsford and they might be up for it too. Aside from that, there are probably a few of my mates from Brentwood/Romford way who'd enjoy it.

I don't think there is any restrictions, if you call or email rachel moss she can reserve the numbers you are looking to fill. :)

Cool. Looks like my other half won't be coming along after all, as she's off to a rave. But I have one more definite and about 4 or 5 maybes. We'll probably go for some drinks afterwards, if you fancy joining us.

That sounds like a good idea to me, if I was you, just book the places and you can always cancel some spaces after. Not sure how popular it will be.
