Best rock songs

#1  Postby NilsGLindgren » Feb 04, 2012 4:05 pm

Hello
I am doing a play list on Spotify - with rock songs (duh). I have found a lot of Best 100 Rock Songs From the Known Galaxy on the 'net, but I do not always agree with what is a rock song like Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" or, Jimi Hendrix "Hey Joe" - these are great songs, but, are they truly rock? I don't know.
What are your favorites? Which are the best rock songs? (Listening to "Smoke on the Water" while writing) ...

I got a Best of Nazareth album for a friend last week. Not a band I'd ever heard much of but I've been quite enjoying this track off the album. The version I have is actually two minutes longer than this vid but 3 mins is probably enough.

A classic of the rock genre methinks.

Ah, good old Focus. The guitarist and the keyboard player hate each other for life

Ok, I could list the entire back catalogue of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, but instead I'll post this gem:
Bob Seger - Mainstreet

A test for every rock fan: can you name all the guitar players in the video?

Almost too obvious to mention:

Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland (Live in New York 2001). Best version of one of the best songs ever.
RIP Big Man.

I'm talking about Clarence Clemons, who passed away in June. :(

Funny that hoopy - I remember that piece from ... late 60s? Early 70s? It was considered a party song I think - or am I mixing things up? Having a bit of senior moment? :dopey:

A classic. And one of the best intros ever.

Speaking of classics: Neil Young - Like A Hurricane

Thin Lizzy and "The Boys are back in town" was on my list already. I put Phil Lynnott´s solo "The King's Call" in another play list, called Hommage, for obvious reasons - it contains only hommages; funny, lots of them to Elvis or Ali Farka Touré (though he is not a rock musician).
I put in two from the 'Oo, Boris the Spider, and My Generation ... those were the days kids ...
I saw Clarence Clemmons in Copenhagen in mid 90s, the Boss was doing the Lucky Town tour. I have kept a t-shirt from the concert, which I treasure like the family jewels ... or anything that I treasure REALLY REALLY much.

According to their wiki, the band formed in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1968 and My White Bicycle is from 1975.

As I say it's a band that kinda passed me by but I think that track has a real classic rock sound. I'm sure in 1975 it woulda also qualified as a party track too. After all, In the 70s it wasn't just Arthur Brown who was living in a crazy world.

OK, hoopy, so, obviously not late 60s. Nor, in fact, early 70s. I may mix it up with a track from mad guy Napoleon XIV -something about a little tricycle or whatever.
...
Hey, I knew I was on to something: Nazareth didn't write that title, it was a cover from a 60s psychadelic band
Wikipedia wrote:As Tomorrow:
"My White Bicycle" / "Claramount Lake" (single, Parlophone R5597, May 1967)

So, late 60s ... thought the recording sounded different ...
EDIT: And, as for Napoleon XIV; 1966 "I'm In Love With My Little Red Tricycle"

More classic rock and also from a 1975 album according to wikipedia. I thought this was done in 1972 but I'll defer to wikipedia's occasional accuracy.
