The (Official?) Electronic/Rave/House/Trance Music Thread

I was looking yonder and hither for a thread that covers my favorite genres... Sadly enough, I could not find it!

So, for all eternity... What are your favorite Electronic/Rave/House/Trance bands and songs?

My current favorite is Ratatat (which is, truly, borderline), Crystal Castles' new album (which I like for the jump into, for all intents, rave), and (just now!) I've finally bought one of Massive Attack's vinyls to play later tonight.

Though, of course, I'm greatly intrigued as to this community's picks.

I'm not a huge fan of dance music. But some bands/DJs I do like.

Prodigy, Faithless and Aphex Twin come immediately to mind. I also love Massive Attack...but I'm not sure if they are technically electronica.

My all time favourite track in this genre would either be Faithless' Insomnia (this pretty much got me into what I now consider to be 'good' music) or Massive Attack's A Prayer for England (a beautiful track that sends shivers down my spine).

I'm also just getting into Dub/Dubstep. Which is odd, considering how long I've been into Reggae.

Woo! I've just been getting into this stuff recently. I started with acid house (Plastikman, Phuture, Speedy J/Plus 8 Records), and started spreading out into IDM and minimal stuff. I've really been grooving on Polygon Window (early Aphex Twin project on Warp Records), Monolake, Autechre (mid-90's and earlier), Kavinsky and Danger (more in the Justice/French style), the first couple 808 State records, B12, Basic Channel (SUPER minimal stuff), what else...haven't found any trance groups that I really love, but the Above & Beyond Trance Nation set is pretty amazing. If any of this stuff is up anyone's alley, I'd love more recommendations

I'm also just getting into Dub/Dubstep. Which is odd, considering how long I've been into Reggae.

I haven't made the leap to dubstep yet, though I also have been a reggae/rocksteady/dub fan for awhile. Gotta love those Trojan box sets!

I'm not a hardcore fan but I used to love Bomb the Bass, A Guy Called Gerald, Baby Ford, S-Express (pretty much ignored these days but that first album was excellent) and 808 State as well as Weatherall, Underworld, John Aquaviva, Justin Robertson, Ritchie Hawtin and Orbital. Used to love going clubbing to Desert Storm, Slam, Optimo and occasionally Colours.

Nowadays though most of it seems as if someone's being half tooling with fruity loops and I've went backwards to the Kosmische Rock of Neu, Can, Cluster and the like.

Well not mine. Heh. Harmonia are also exceptionally good, of course they are just made up of members from Cluster and Neu, still you are utterly right to add them. A lot of the ubiquitous drum samples in the late eighties early nineties were whipped from such bands, if the producers of the music were not so lazy that they just knocked off Clyde Stubblefields "Funky Drummer". I got so fucking sick of hearing that.

Some nice music mentioned here, Warp, Hawtin, etc... I got started on the Orb about 20 years back ( I'm getting old) and made my way through to the current Berlin scene, which is really happening. A lot of DJs are moving there, since they can make a better living there than in the States

I used to DJ casually here in Japan, but haven't in two years or so. I liked trippy, minimal music. I played a lot off of M_Nus, Kompakt, Border Community, Karloff Recordings, Perlon and Wag Records. You individuals are great, but you need to have faith in the label.

The last tracks I went really crazy for were these:

Nathan Fake, the Sky was Pink, James Holden remix, a beautiful swirling build to layered depth.


Andre Kraml, Safari, again, James Holden remix. He fucks songs up good. This one is known for shredded animal yelps mixed over a beautiful beat. By about four minutes in, it's insane.


And this track, Bay of Figs by Marc Houle, made the house explode. Just the perfect amount of build.


Keep in mind, those are meant for djs to use, so they have relatively long intros and outros. In context, in a set, they aren't so stretched out.

One other interesting fact about The Knife: They created an opera adaptation of On the Origin of Species last year in celebration of Darwin's Centennial.
