I've got a few long solo drives coming up, and I've been loading up playlists of long songs, because it makes the drive seem shorter with only 6 or 7 songs an hour instead of 15. Even better if they're best played loud. Here are a few from today's trip...

On long trips I used to load the CD player up with Bach's Brandenburg, violin and harpsichord concertos. By the time I got through that lot I'd be half way between Sydney and Brisbane or Melbourne. Sometimes I'd pause the music and listen to the various rural radio stations for shits and giggles. They really are a breed apart, especially when it comes to talkback programs.

Ah yes, Yes. Definitely should add a few of theirs to the list...

And as for rural radio, I'm actually in Forster, NSW at the moment, and should probably tune into Great Lakes FM for a while. It's a mixed bag, but at its best it can be brilliant.

Edit: Last time I tuned in to Great Lakes FM it was all Tull, Meatloaf, and Metallica - this time: show tunes of the '30s and '40s, Sinatra and Judy Garland.

All very bad driving songs, coz they start slow and by the time the finish you suddenly wonder where the speed limit went to.

This is where cruise control comes in. I hate that feature with a passion, but it does prevent me from inadvertently doing 160 in a 110km/hr zone. Even two of my trucks could do 130 at 2900 rpm. Redline was 3200.

What with all those hair driers in the bushes and surreptitiously clamped to the sides of police cars these days exceeding speed limits is really, really bad for the bank balance, and the concomitant demerit point system can easily suspend you from legally driving on a public road for a minimum of three months.

Same. Much as I dislike cruise control, most of my long-distance driving is the Pacific Highway, which is, these days, far too good for its 110kmh limit and policed to fuck, so cruise control it is.

Which allows for otherwise unwise driving music, at least

I used to use muic for long drives but now Audio books rule and it certainly tones my urge to speed down whereas SuperTramp et al wants me to turn the wick up.

Paired with Pioneer Wayz which are remarkable at noise cancelling ...I look forward to long trips just to get some serious reading/listening time and no fatigue from cabin noise levels.

Haven't listened to Kraftwerk in ages, and like the Cluster, although it could be a bit drift-off-the-road for dull motorway driving.

Long drive needing long song? Telegraph Road. Don't leave home without it. Beware: It might cause overspeed.

If you're in wide-open spaces, you might need hick muxic like "Free Bird" or "Green Grass And High Tides" or "Jessica".

If you can deal with shorter stuff, try "Diamonds On My Windshield" by Tom Waits. Ultimate driving song.

It's already on my playlist And as discussed, I've given in to using cruise control, as my main long drive requires dealing with zealous policing of a too-low limit. 110kmh/68mph for stuff like this or better:

I don't know what qualifies as a long song, probably not just over 6 minutes, but anyway, I love the way this one starts off very soothing and then builds to a lovely little flamenco prance. It's nice to drive to.
