There has never before been a time in my life when there was not David Bowie. :(

I'm tempted to take off work and have a good sulk.

Ziggy is on my 10 Albums to Take to a Desert Island list. Bowie was a huge influence on me in my late teens and early 20s, along with Lou Reed, New York Dolls, and Iggy. I was all glammed up with teased hair and black nail polish.

I have the excuse that I'm sick with a raging ear, nose and throat infection at the moment but that's exactly what I'm doing.

Also, my mother is crying.

Yeah. I saw him at Birmingham Town Hall in '71, on the 'Man who Sold the World' tour.

And my Mum definitely didn't like him wearing a dress on the album cover. "But you like Danny La Rue, Mum". "That's different".

The shark was already jumped by Dancing in the Street. I try to forget that ever happened.
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

I love so much of Bowie, especially his early stuff, and some of my favourites have already been picked. However, nobody ever seems to pick this one, which is, undoubtedly, my favourite.

I said I was sad about him on the phone to my mum, and she just went 'Oh, I'm sick of hearing about him! Why does everyone have to go on about him??' I explained that it was because he'd died and he was a big influence on the music/fashion/art world. She replied in a disgusted voice 'why did he have to dress up like a woman?' I explained that it was called creativity. Then I gave up.

I don't think my mom had a clue who he was. She liked Liberace, though.

Shit.
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

Indeed.

This has reminded me that I had a lot of his output on my old zen player, which of course went when it died a few months ago. I tried to remember where I got it from, and it turns out it was from Chris’s music collection which is now on Alex’s computer.

I’ve just copied 1.69gb of mp3’s onto my laptop. He'll not be really dead until we stop playing his music.

Long live Bowie.

I just want to say this thread is great. It's appropriate to mourn. But it's also appropriate to celebrate him and his work.
