For decades, my favorite performance of Beethoven's sixth symphony has been by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bruno Walter. This recording was part of the CBS Great Performances series, one of the first LP albums I ever bought.
I found a better performance, after all this time.

Daniel Barenboim conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin.
He slows the tempo a bit, and keeps it quite steady, keeping the orchestra together better, to the point where I can hear notes, phrases, and instruments that get lost in the shimmer of the faster tempo in some parts of the Columbia Symphony performance.
It's the best symphony ever written, and I found a better copy of it! How exciting, eh?
