Sad Song Thread

#1  Postby Robert_S » Mar 09, 2010 10:43 am

Post your saddest songs here.

I am almost moved to tears when I listen to Fireline Road by James McMurtry. It sorta makes me put my problems in perspective when I'm feeling like the world is pissing on me.

Here's a live video of it, the sound quality is not the best, but the emotions come through.

James McMurtry's Fireline Road from Cowboy Lyrics wrote:My name is Alice Walker, they never told me why
I’m not named for anybody, it’s a name out of the sky
They thought it was pretty I guess, way back when
I’ll change it some day
I like to pretend, I’m Just a visitor here
Like on one of those shows
In a house full of people I don’t hardly know
But we'll all get to home in a week or so
Back to real life

And I’m picking up the carpet in the corner where I crash
I’m too tired to separate the pennies from the trash
And I don’t guess it matters even why Jesus died
I can tell you about sins

They got this duplex up on Fire Line Road
It’s way out from town, so the rent’s pretty low,
Not much more than a cinder block cell
Just like the one next door
And the next one as well

And the bus don’t run out here but three times a day
The 7-11, it’s a full mile away
And there’s a car in the yard, mostly rust and dents
We moved here in it, but it hasn’t run since

Forget my name, can you forget my face
Gonna lose myself in some finer place
Finer Places, where I’ll go
I’ll leave no trace out on Fire Line Road

And there’s a pile of daddy’s quick-picks scattered on the floor
Among the half empty bottles, that chair against the door
In case he comes home drinkin’, with lovin on his mind
I’d never let it happen, but that don’t stop him tryin’
My sister weren’t so lucky, he got to her too soon
She never saw it coming, he knew just what to do
To keep her silent
I swear to god I’ll kill him if I can
He said she made him do it, after all he’s just a man

Forget my name, can you forget my face
Gonna lose myself in some finer place
Finer Places, where I’ll go
I’ll leave no trace out on Fire Line Road

Now she snorts that crank, and stares at the phone
She ain’t big as a minute, just skin on bone
She bites her nails right down to the quick
And they’ve taken her babies, and they won’t give them back
And I know she loves them and god knows she tries,
But when you’re that far down you’re just going to get high
It’s like eating or breathing to the rest of us
She can’t even feel bad without the stuff

Forget my name, can you forget my face
Gonna lose myself in some finer place
Finer Places, where I’ll go
And I’ll leave no trace out on Fire Line Road

My name is Alice Walker, they never told me why

A song that's always affected me is Anna Lee, by Dream Theater, not least because I'd just found out that the most important person in my life at the time the song came out had undergone the same sort of experiences as the girl in the song.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Helpless child
They invite your hands to fill their needs
Will be the same
Shameless smile
To steal from you the innocence that bleeds
Will they feel your pain

-Chorus-
Trying to believe
The scars unseen
The tears wash clean
You don't wanna breathe the air you breathe
You don't know how you'll live a life alone

She keeps holding on
Holding on to you
Let her breathe the air
Don't wanna be alone
Where do you belong
Anna Lee
-/Chorus-

Behind those eyes
The vivid scene
A lucid dream within
Questioned secrets are revealed
And everytime
You can't deny
The lines that trace your skin
Wounds that never heal

repeat Chorus

And now she's calling out a name
Can't keep on hiding all her pain
You feel the rain move in
As you begin
To turn and answer the call

repeat Chorus

Peter Hammill, A Better Time:

:(

Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Doe No. 24. This one's an embellishment on a true story of a deaf-blind youth found on a street and, being 'unclaimed', institutionalised for the rest of his life. A little poetic licence, but it's a beautiful song.

There is grandeur in this view of life

But the Mother of Mysteries is another man's call:
Why is there something 'stead of nothing at all?

Mad World - Gary Jules

Also, "The Little Girl" by John Michael Montgomery. It has a religious theme, but the real suffering the girl goes through can't be discounted.

P.S. In retrospect, I picked two similarly themed songs because I have two daughters, so to me the saddest thing would be something sad/bad happening to them.

Easy one for me, Rolling Stones Wild Horses, I first heard it at the funeral of my mums best friend, an avid horsewoman who died of cancer, her childhood sweetheart chose the song and I still cry every time I hear it.

Strange Fruit

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
Blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
for the rain to gather
for the wind to suck
for the sun to rot
for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
