The Prog Rock Thread

#1  Postby stijndeloose » May 25, 2010 9:59 pm

Brace for impact! This is our first prog rock thread. :)

Just to post what you like, and comment. There's doubtlessly some people who will go :yuk: , but there's some real good prog rock out there, imo. Like this:

Saw Yes a few months ago. Thought I'd miss Jon Anderson's presence, but the new guy was great and they gave a blazing performance. Still got it.

I could cheerfully fill the thread with Yes, but instead I shall publicise an underexposed outfit: here's IQ doing Unsolid Ground (actually one of their 'least proggy' tracks). It's from a brilliant concept double-album, naturally.

It Bites were prog, and bloody good too. The world imagined them defunct after Francis Dunnery left to pursue a very fruitful solo career; but after 19 years(!) they came back with a new singer and album (The Tall Ships) recently, even proggier than before. Grand stuff. Here's Playground:

Finally, Transatlantic doing Bridge Across Forever, from the album of the same name. Uncharacteristically brief at a mere 5:33 - their tracks are usually 20+ minutes...

About time!

I have to admit I saw It Bites in the eighties and thought they were aptly named. Yes however are beastly good.
I had a few choices to mull over but I think I'll start with this. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I still love this track and album. The drums are fucking insane. Singalonga-GONG!

I went to only one concert, unfortunately. In 1998 or so, with Khoroshev on keyboard. Pretty darn great performance, too, and Steve was still in good shape!

Saw Jethro Tull twice, so:

This thread needs some ELP:

And for something a little bit more obscure, National Health:

Oh, and some Peter Gabriel whilst I'm at it:

Edit: Oh Fudge It. Motherfumbling y*u-codsupping-t*be and its new tank-fly-boss-walk-jam-nitty-gritty frustrating anti-user interface. Crock it.

...and breath...

Can anyone point me towards embedding instructions, with reference to the new y*u t*be system, please?

It's:

E.g.

Alternatively, just quote somebody else's post and edit the link in their one. That ought to work.

I had left the "&feature=related" bit on the end of the URL, which you're not supposed to do apparently (cheers Callan! )

I was trying to post a version of YYZ (with a Peart solo) but, as Hackenslash has already posted one, I'll test my new-found embedding skills with a nice bit of guitar widdling from a debatably prog rock, but definitely progressive, legend:
