Uh-mazing.

Thank you

It's from the classic Freaks. A monumental film in its time for its portrayal of people with deformities as normal people.
You may never have seen it but if you watch The Simpsons you've almost certainly seen it referenced to.

You're more likely to find the Strongbow brand (amongst others) in AUS. Montheith's is from NZL.

If you need them, you can get travel tips from locals in the Aussies and Kiwis thread in the Social & Fun Forum: http://www.rationalskepticism.org/fun-g ... t1340.html

Looks like it'll be a month-long Montheiths hunt for me then

You can get it at Dan Murphy's stores, a liquor chain here. Better equipped pubs might have it too.

PS. I'm from NZL, and living in AUS. :)

Oh dear, yes! I have met someone like this. She was a very gentle and caring person, especially with children. She was also totally convinced that she was very evil. To hear her talk, the devil himself lurked in her. She was very religious, and one of the things that apparently kept her going was a plan for some long pilgrimage, I forget where. Something to do with the Virgin Mary. But seeing the damage her religion had caused in the first place ... she simply wouldn't accept that the horrible things that she experienced as a result of her psychiatric condition were the products of her brain, no, they were dark metaphysical forces and it was all her fault - I can see how this makes therapy much more difficult.

I think you'll fit right in :)

Last year I did a placement in psychiatry and was struck by the fact that the majority of cases I saw had undertones of religious guilt in them (lots of psychoses about going to hell, seeing devils; all of these people had been part of evangelical churches)

I'd love to hear more about this *curious*

I worked in an area in which every other shop-front was a new evangelical church, you know, the type with lots of shouting and pushing people over by their foreheads and telling them not to see a doctor because you can pray the cancer out of you.

Anyway, almost every single patient with schizophrenia would mumble about god or jesus, a lot said their problems were punishment for their sins, a handful didn't take medication because god didn't want them too. It was messy and horrible.

I also see lots of christians who present very late into their disease because they have tried to use faith healing. Not only does it make it harder to treat them, the NHS eventually gets blamed for not helping people, which is very annoying. Then, of course, you get Jehovah's Witnesses who make any sort of surgery 10 times more difficult as you can't use any blood.

I can trump all of them. I was brought up as a Christian Scientist. Basically it teaches that disease isn't real, it's an illusion, and Jesus healed by opening people's eyes to the unreality of disease and you can too. Also, going to the doctor can interfere with this healing process. The religion is dwindling. Funny that.
