Consider yourself one of us?

#1  Postby Bee » Dec 20, 2011 5:53 pm

Hello all,

I only found this forum yesterday but already feel at home, so thank you to anyone I've already had a pleasant exchange with.

I'm a 23-year old student doctor, was brought up as a free-thinker and consider myself a humanist. Last year I did a placement in psychiatry and was struck by the fact that the majority of cases I saw had undertones of religious guilt in them (lots of psychoses about going to hell, seeing devils; all of these people had been part of evangelical churches), which has re-kindled my passion to find out more about atheism, rational thought and the free-thinking community.

Things I like include science books with pretty pictures, anything by Chris Morris and cider.

Thinks that make me rage include faith healing, the fact I was duped into getting an iPhone on a contract and it crashes constantly and the fact that I still assume all doctors are male.

So that is it! I'm looking forward to meeting/chatting with more than you

Well, us. You must have missed the subtitle that makes the mystery rather less mysterious:

Welcome aboard, Bee!

I read your thread, but didn't add to it, because I thought the replies and your responses were very well-said and thorough.

Thinks that make me rage include faith healing, the fact I was duped into getting an iPhone on a contract and it crashes constantly and the fact that I still assume all doctors are male.

 Good one, even though the doctor thing doesn't make me rage, personally. Around here it seems to be pretty much an even split, at least for doctors who are in their 50s and younger. Older than that, it starts being a very noticeable (though not exclusive) male profession. What does make me sit back and take notice, however, is that most doctors, female and male, are suddenly so ... young! Ha!

Anyway, welcome again, from Canada.

I worked in an area in which every other shop-front was a new evangelical church, you know, the type with lots of shouting and pushing people over by their foreheads and telling them not to see a doctor because you can pray the cancer out of you.

Anyway, almost every single patient with schizophrenia would mumble about god or jesus, a lot said their problems were punishment for their sins, a handful didn't take medication because god didn't want them too. It was messy and horrible.

I also see lots of christians who present very late into their disease because they have tried to use faith healing. Not only does it make it harder to treat them, the NHS eventually gets blamed for not helping people, which is very annoying. Then, of course, you get Jehovah's Witnesses who make any sort of surgery 10 times more difficult as you can't use any blood.

Having said that, the power of faith can have a great impact on recovery and keeping depression at bay; religion is one hell of a placebo if used right, but I don't know if it outweighs the damage it can cause as well.
