Hello. I'm Tom

#1  Postby Columbus » Oct 18, 2010 12:08 am

I was reading a thread and decided to post my opinion, but it occurred to me that I should first introduce myself a bit.

I was born and raised Catholic, in the most whitebread suburban Christian middle class USonian home imaginable.

As a child I started having trouble with what I was being taught by the nuns at school. I knew enough math to know that 1+1+1 does not equal 1, ever. Then I got a Bible I could read for myself. :o That is when I found that Jesus Himself didn't believe in Trinitarianism. I quickly realized that I must be an atheist. I couldn't be a Protestant because then I would go to Hell.

I had no idea that Protestants believed this nonsense, too.

I no longer consider myself anything but Tom. I could be an atheist, a Christian, a Catholic, a deist, a Muslim, a Buddhist, or an agnostic, it depends on the question and the context. I don't find the labels all that useful myself. They always seem to come unstuck at inconvenient moments, leaving nothing but messy residue.

Hi Tom!
Hope you enjoy it here!

So in what question and context would you consider yourself to be a Muslim or Christian?
Я пью за разоренный дом,
За злую жизнь мою,
За одиночество вдвоем,
И за тебя я пью, -
За ложь меня предавших губ,
За мертвый холод глаз,
За то, что мир жесток и груб,
За то, что Бог не спас.

Hello again.
I'm not new exactly. But I didn't log in here for a few years. Aren't you a virgin again after seven years?

So in what question and context would you consider yourself to be a Muslim or Christian?

Two completely different reasons.
I'm culturally a Christian. I still do Easter Vigil Mass. Ever since I came out as gay I "got" Christianity.

The Muslim part is harder to explain. It was Muslims who told me I am Islamic. For example, a Muslim asked me, "You believe in God, and only one god, right?". I said, "Yes". I started to explain deism. He cut me off saying, "Then you are Muslim!".

So I am Muslim. Who knew?

I just love religious people. They're a total hoot.

Not sure, but considering your thread's been dead for several years, I guess that makes you born again :teef:

I'm not a Jew, a trinitarian, but I have a vague god belief.
That apparently makes me a Muslim, according to some Muslims in the USA.
Virgin you are not for sure.

Welcome back.
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

Welcome Tom.
Logically, one is an atheist or one is not. You can be an agnostic atheist, which for those that really understand the terms, is the most intellectually honest position to take.

I was joking Tom. I could care less if you are Muslim, Christian or Jew. It holds no significance to me. If you however have doubts about your self-identity in this regard, someone here will probably be able and willing to aid you. Not me.

Thanks for the welcome.
Most precisely I would probably qualify as "culturally Christian agnostic deist".
Here in places where I have an opportunity to explain myself I'll say that. In most circumstances the question "What religion are you?" is "What religious community do you belong to?". When I answer, "I'm atheist", that means I don't have one nor am I looking for one.
