Over the years, Republicans have made every effort to deny that corporations write the legislation that they introduce in state legislatures throughout the nation. But when Florida Rep. Rachel Burgin introduced a bill known as HM 685 in the Florida House in November, she forgot to do one crucial thing: Remove all references to ALEC. The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is a pay for play organization in which corporations pay tens of thousands of dollars to have access to state legislators across the country. Corporations craft bills that give them an advantage and then pass the legislation to state legislators who then introduce the legislation in various state legislatures around the country for a vote. Most of these bills usually involve killing environmental laws, lowering corporate taxes, eliminating voting rights, and destroying unions. Many right wing activists, lawmakers, and businessmen are part of ALEC, including the Koch brothers. Continued...
