Understatement of the century

It was worded to guarantee its defeat. By stipulating that the President is to be elected by members of parliament it caused a sufficient number of pro-republic voters who wanted the President elected by popular vote to vote against it.

In all candour, I can't see many MPs on either side of the debate wanting Parliament to relinquish powers that they currently control via the Governor General (appointed by the PM and rubber stamped by the monarch) to a directly elected President. I certainly wouldn't be waiting up to see if that's an option on the next ballot whenever it may be.

With Albo having already kicked it into touch for the rest of this term, it may well not be until after Charles himself has carked it at this rate.

Some other countries are going to act more swiftly though. Republican movements in the Caribbean already appear to have gathered a lot of momentum.

It's far worse than that. They're going to be adopted by Prince Andrew!

So is that Hell or Purgatory? Logically it would be the latter.

They don't have much choice in being offered the job but surely they could, at least in theory, decline? Definitely also in practice in fact, Charles could have passed on the opportunity had he wanted to I'm sure.

Personally I see it as a (mostly) charming and (mostly) innocent folkloric tradition, at least in 'modern' countries.

He just made it in in time. I'm sure he's looking down at us all from heaven now surrounded by virgins or what not. :shifty:

I prefer to think of him on a spike in the vision of hell he traumatised children with - with Satan shitting hot bricks of lava into his mouth, forever. Is that wrong of me?

I'm not going to say you're wrong, but, that's probably not the rightest thing you've posted.

I’m sensing a somewhat negative vibe. You’re usually much less ambiguous.

And, gone to join his Pedo-in-chief Ratzinger, that disgusting old kiddy-fiddler George Pell! What a great start to the new year, with two of the vilest people on the planet removed within the first fortnight.

Aye, there's very few people whose death I would truly feel that deserved a 'good riddance' - but kiddie-fiddlers like Pell deserve that and more.

Beat me to it.

More on Pell going to somewhere rhyming with his surname here ...

Diamond, and no one was saying what did her in. I don't doubt it was covid. They called it a hoax and didn't get vaccinated. Another one who died, at least in part, because of an old psychopath with stupid hair and the fantasy world that they live in.
